Why Are Wasps Flying Into Your Aireborough Home? Common Causes and Solutions

Filling or sealing the hole you think the wasps are using is the commonest mistake, and it often makes more of them appear inside the house.

The mistake: plugging the gap

You see wasps going in and out of a small opening in the wall, under the roof edge or beside a window, and the instinct is to stuff it with filler, tape or a cloth. It seems logical: no gap, no wasps.

In practice the colony is already inside. Cut off from their usual way out, the workers look for another. That can be a different crack, a gap around a pipe, a ceiling void, or an indoor light fitting. People who block a gap often find wasps in the bedroom within hours, which is the opposite of what they wanted.

So the first rule of this checklist is the simplest: leave the entrance alone, and work out what is happening around it.

The same thinking applies to caulk, cement, tape and even a flowerpot stood over a hole. Anything that closes the opening while the colony is active is likely to push wasps to look elsewhere. Wait until the nest has been treated, and only then think about tidying up the gap with a tradesperson.

Checklist: confirm that it really is an entrance

If you tick three or more, you almost certainly have a nest behind that gap. Take a mental note of where it is, and then step back.

Why wasps appear indoors when a nest is in the structure

Wasps nesting in a wall cavity, soffit or loft are never far from interior spaces. Small gaps around pipes, cables, plasterboard edges and ceiling roses can open a route from the nest into a room. Workers that wander in are heading for light, which is why they bunch up at windows.

That makes a particular pattern: wasps inside the house, nowhere near any food, congregating at glass, and more numerous in rooms nearest to the roof or the affected wall. If that is what you are seeing, the right target is the nest itself, rather than the wasps in the room.

This is also the pattern in which people feel the temptation to seal things. Resist, and use the time to note which rooms are affected.

What to do while you wait for a visit

  1. Open the window in the affected room wide if a wasp is on the glass, so it can leave.
  2. Keep doors to the worst-affected room closed, and put a towel along the base of the door if wasps are coming through from a void.
  3. Do not use anything to flush wasps out of a gap.
  4. Keep children, pets and visitors out of the area close to the nest entrance.
  5. Cover food and drink, and keep bins closed so you do not add extra attractions.
  6. Take a photo of the outside gap from a safe distance for the booking call.

Access, and what to tell us

Nests are found in eaves, walls, chimneys, trees, bushes and holes in the ground. Where the technician can reach the nest easily, the work is quick. You can help by moving garden furniture, bikes or ladders away from the area, and by letting us know if the nest is near a boundary or on a neighbour’s side.

If the empty nest is in a spot that matters to you, such as above a door, ask at booking whether it can be taken down afterwards. Keep that conversation separate from the main treatment, since the nest itself comes first and what is done with it afterwards can be agreed on the day.

Commercial customers should think about the same questions: which door or loading bay is nearest the nest, whether staff need to use it, and how customers will be kept clear. A short note on this when you call helps us plan the visit. Our work covers domestic and commercial premises alike, and the pricing is the same fixed amount.

Stay calm and move slowly. Wasps that have come in through a void are usually disoriented and will head for the window. Open it as wide as it goes, close the room door behind you, and give them time.

Avoid crushing wasps against curtains or walls, as a squashed wasp in a confined space can lead to a sting. Never try to swat a cluster. If there are several, keep the room shut, leave the window open, and come back later when things have calmed down.

Booking and what it costs

The team covers the Aireborough area, north-west of Leeds, and nearby villages. Treatment is a fixed £90 for the nest, £35 for any additional nest on the same property, and there is no call-out charge. The price is confirmed on the phone before a technician attends, and nothing is done until you agree. We are open seven days a week, offer same-day service, and work in both homes and commercial properties.

Call 0113 347 0014, or use the booking form on the contact page. If anyone at the property is allergic to wasp stings, let us know when booking. A sting that brings swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash needs a 999 call.

Frequently asked questions

Why did more wasps come indoors after I filled the hole?
The colony could not use its normal exit and the workers searched for another route, which can lead into the building. Leave suspected entrances alone and get the nest treated.
How small can a wasp nest entrance be?
It can be very small, around the size of a finger or less, yet carry heavy traffic. The activity at the hole is a better clue than its size.
Can I remove the empty nest myself afterwards?
Ask the technician at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down. It is better not to handle it yourself until you have been told it is safe to do so.
