Wasp Nest in a Hedge or Bush – What Barwick-in-Elmet Garden Owners Should Know

A nest in a mature tree or tall conifer is often spotted only by the wasp traffic, and working at height near it is a risk that is better left to a technician.

Nests in trees are often out of sight, but not out of reach

A wasp nest in a tree or tall conifer should be left alone and reported for treatment, particularly if it is above head height. Reaching it means a ladder or climbing, and doing that near a colony is how people end up falling as well as being stung.

Wasps build in trees in several ways. A queen may start a nest in a fork of branches, in a hollow where a limb has broken off, or inside a thick conifer where the dense needles hold the paper ball out of sight. By late summer these nests can be large, yet from the ground you may see nothing except a steady flow of wasps going into the canopy.

Because trees are tall, you notice the wasps at head height, but the nest may be two or three times higher than that.

Spotting a nest from the ground

Use your eyes and, if you have them, binoculars, but keep well back. Wasps on their way to a high nest travel in a clear line, and stepping underneath it is a bad idea.

A nest seen in autumn may look abandoned. Do not assume it is, and do not go near it for a closer look.

Why ladders and pruning poles are the wrong answer

Garden owners sometimes decide to knock a nest down with a pole or cut the branch it hangs from. Both approaches are dangerous. A pole sends vibration through a branch and requires you to stand directly underneath the nest, looking up, with your face exposed. A ladder puts you in a fixed position with little chance of retreating, and wasps do not distinguish between you and the thing that shook their home.

Cutting a branch is no better. The cut section can fall with the colony still active, scattering wasps on the ground near your feet. Chainsaws and tree surgeons’ tools create heavy vibration, so anyone arranging tree work should hold off until the nest has been dealt with.

If you have a tree surgeon booked, tell them about the wasps before they arrive, and ask them to wait until the nest has been treated.

Keeping a safe zone around the tree

Establish a space under and around the tree where no one goes, at least until the visit. For a big tree, think about where the branch overhang is, and where the wasps are travelling.

Move garden furniture, play equipment and anything the dog uses out from underneath. Keep lawn mowing well away, since the noise and vibration carries through the ground and the trunk. Do not park a car beneath the canopy if you can avoid it, as opening doors beneath a nest can be awkward.

If anyone is stung, wash the sting area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. If there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999. Anyone with a known allergy should speak to their GP, and you should tell us about any allergies when you book.

Trees on boundaries and near buildings

Trees often stand on the edge of a garden, beside a path or close to a house, and a nest in one of them can affect several households at once. If the tree overhangs a neighbour’s garden or a shared drive, let the people nearby know, so that nobody walks or parks underneath it without realising.

A tree close to the house also brings the wasps closer to windows and roof edges. Keep windows nearest the tree shut on warm days, and watch that foraging wasps are not finding their way indoors. If you see wasps inside the house as well as in the tree, tell us when you book so the technician can look at the whole picture while on site.

Tall trees may also be owned by someone else, such as a landlord, a management company or the owner of an adjoining plot. If that applies to you, the person responsible needs to agree to the treatment. Who must arrange or pay depends on your agreement or policy, so check that rather than assuming.

Preparing for the visit and afterwards

Give a clear description of the tree: which one it is, how high the wasps seem to be going in and what is beneath it. Tell the technician whether there are fences, ponds or shrubs below that might limit where they can stand, because access is the only thing that matters when it comes to getting the job done.

Stay indoors or well back during the visit unless asked otherwise. Afterwards, wait for the technician’s advice before going under the tree. If you want the empty nest taken down, ask when you book whether that can be done. Any pruning or felling can go ahead once the nest has been dealt with, but it is sensible to mention the wasps to the person doing the work so they take extra care.

Frequently asked questions

Can a nest in a tall tree still be treated?
Yes. Describe the tree and how high the wasp activity appears to be when you book, and the technician will plan the visit around it.
Will wasps nest in the same tree again next year?
Wasps do not reuse an old nest, but a similar sheltered spot could attract a new queen. A quick scan of the tree in late spring is a good habit.
Is it safe to leave a high nest until winter?
Waiting leaves you with weeks of risk around the tree, and nests are not always as inactive as they look. It is better to have it treated now.
