Guides on finding, understanding and dealing with wasp nests.
A wasp nest next to a family home is mostly a question of keeping children and animals clear until the technician arrives, and a few simple habits do exactly that.
A wasp nest in the ground looks harmless until someone mows over it. Here is why digging, flooding or stamping on the hole is a bad idea.
Wasps follow predictable lines between their nest and their food. Reading that line from a safe distance is the most reliable way to find out whether a nest is active.
Garden machinery sends vibrations through soil, fences and walls, and wasps defending a nest can read that as an attack, so a quick tidy-up can turn into a crowd of stings.
Waist, hair, colour and the way an insect holds its legs in flight can all be read from a few metres away, and together they settle most doubts.
