Wasp Nests Under Roof Tiles – A Common Problem for Cleckheaton Homes

Before you book a treatment it helps to know that the insects at your roofline are wasps, and not bees or something else that needs a different kind of help.

The short answer: check before you call

A wasp nest under the roof tiles needs treatment, but not every insect going in and out of a gap is a wasp. Bees can also nest in roof spaces, and they need quite different handling. We deal with wasps, so it is worth being confident about what you are seeing before you book.

The good news is that the differences are easy to spot if you can watch from a safe distance for a few minutes. Cleckheaton, a West Yorkshire town, has the same insects as anywhere else, so the same checks apply.

Do not go closer than the far side of the garden, and do not use a ladder to take a closer look. Everything below can be judged from the ground.

It is common to mistake one insect for another, particularly when you are watching a fast-moving gap high on a wall. Taking a little time at the start saves a wasted booking and ensures the right kind of help reaches your roof.

What a wasp looks like

Wasps have a smooth, shiny body with a narrow waist between the thorax and abdomen and strong yellow and black bands. They look sleek rather than furry, with a sharp, almost hard outline. They fly quickly and directly, and tend to hover and then dart.

Around a nest they move constantly. You will see them entering and leaving a gap throughout the day, often carrying chewed material or flying out empty. In late summer they also hang around bins, drinks and sweet food.

Another clue is behaviour at the entrance. Wasps often crowd briefly at the opening and may show a slightly aggressive jostling, whereas a bee colony tends to keep a calm, queue-like flow. Late in the season, wasps may hover near the entrance as though guarding it.

If you are still undecided after a few minutes of watching, return to the same spot at a different time of day. Behaviour that seemed ambiguous often becomes obvious on a warm afternoon when traffic is at its busiest.

What a bee looks like

Honeybees are usually golden-brown, slightly furry and rounder, and their colouring is duller than a wasp’s. Bumblebees are large, plump and very furry, with a slow, bumbling flight. Both tend to visit flowers rather than your picnic.

A honeybee colony in a roof space produces steady, calm traffic, often with bees carrying yellow or orange pollen on their legs. A bumblebee nest is usually small and noisy rather than busy. If what you are watching fits these descriptions, the insects are probably not wasps.

Honeybees may form a visible cluster at the entrance on warm days, a sort of beard of bees hanging near the gap, and their nests are made of wax, not the grey papery material wasps make. You are unlikely to see the nest itself from the ground, but a speck of papery grey chewed material near the gap suggests wasps.

What to do if they are bees

We treat wasps and do not claim to treat bees or hornets or other pests. If you think you have honeybees or bumblebees, contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation. Bees are valuable and often can be moved rather than destroyed, so it is worth getting the right advice.

If you are unsure, take a clear photo from a distance, describe what you see when you contact us and we will tell you whether it sounds like a wasp nest. Do not guess if you are not certain, because treating the wrong insect would not solve the problem.

Do not block the opening or squirt anything into it in the meantime. Bees that are shut in cause the same problems that wasps do, and destroying them when they could be moved is a loss. Take the time to find the right help.

Other things that look like wasps

Some other insects are mistaken for wasps. Hoverflies have yellow and black stripes but do not sting, and they hover in the open rather than entering a hole. Solitary bees and wasps may nest in small holes, but the traffic is very light compared with a colony.

The deciding clue is volume and persistence. A nest of social wasps produces constant traffic to the same entrance, increasing through the summer. If you see this under the tiles, assume wasps and keep clear.

If it turns out that you have more than one kind of insect around the house, which is quite possible in summer, deal with each separately. Wasps at one gap and bees at another need two different responses.

Where the insects are large, dark and slow, with a heavy flight, you may be looking at something else altogether, and again we do not treat hornets. Describe what you see to us and we will say honestly whether it sounds like our work.

Booking a wasp nest treatment

If the insects are wasps, a nest is treated for a fixed £90, with £35 for each additional nest on the same property. There is no call-out charge. We are open seven days a week, with same-day service offered, and we work on both domestic and commercial premises. A trained technician attends, and the work is fully insured.

Ring 0113 347 0014 or use the online booking form on the contact page. The price is confirmed on the phone before the technician visits, and nothing is done without your agreement. Tell us about the height of the gap and about any allergy in the household. We cover Cleckheaton and the surrounding area.

If you have watched for several days and you are confident they are wasps, say so when you ring and describe what you observed. A confident description allows the booking to be made quickly.

No, we treat wasps only. For honeybees or bumblebees, contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation.
What if I am still not sure what is in my roof?
Describe what you see when you ring and we will give you an honest view. If it sounds like wasps we can arrange a visit.
