Same-Day Wasp Nest Treatment in Collingham – What to Expect
Letting the dog or the children carry on as normal is the usual mistake. A few simple house rules keep everyone safe between the booking and the visit.
The mistake: carrying on as if nothing has changed
Most families notice a wasp nest, say a quiet word to each other, and then let the children play in the garden and the dog out for its usual run. That is the commonest slip. Wasps near a nest are on guard, and a ball bouncing into the flight path or a dog sniffing at the entrance can set off a defensive response from a great many insects at once.
If you are in Collingham, in the Leeds area, the answer is to change the routine for the short time before the visit. Wasp Exterminator Leeds offers same-day service and is open seven days a week, so the disruption can be brief if you ring promptly.
What follows is a plain checklist for the gap between the call and the technician.
It also helps to remember that wasps are at their most numerous in late summer. A nest that started in spring has by then become a busy colony, and the older workers are often short-tempered. Families with a garden full of toys, paddling pools and snacks are the ones who tend to meet them.
Children: simple rules they can follow
Young children cannot be expected to judge distance, so the rules need to be few and concrete. Tell them there are wasps living in one spot and that nobody goes near it. Older children can help by watching from a window and describing what they see.
- Keep outdoor play to the part of the garden furthest from the nest, or move it indoors.
- Take paddling pools, scooters and toys out of the affected area only once the technician says it is safe.
- Do not let anyone poke the nest or throw things at it, however curious they are.
- Check drinks and ice lollies outdoors, since wasps are drawn to sugar and can get into a cup unnoticed.
- Make sure older children know to walk away calmly rather than run and flap if a wasp lands on them.
A calm explanation works better than a frightening one. The aim is respect for the spot, not fear of the garden.
If you have a toddler, the safest option is to keep them indoors or in a room at the front of the house until the technician has finished. A pushchair or play mat near the nest side of the house is better moved, too. Remind visitors, grandparents and childminders about the rule, because they may not have seen the nest.
Pets: dogs, cats and small animals
Dogs tend to investigate anything that buzzes, and cats will watch and pounce. Both are at real risk of being stung on the nose or paws. Keep them indoors for the wait, or walk the dog out through the front door and away from the nest side.
Small animals in hutches or runs close to the nest should be moved to a quieter, shaded spot if that can be done safely and without getting near the entrance. If it cannot, cover the run and leave it until the technician has finished.
If a pet is stung and shows swelling around the face, laboured breathing or distress, contact a vet straight away.
Think about water bowls and food bowls too. A dish of leftover meat-based food outside is a magnet for wasps, and a dog drinking from a bowl with a wasp in it is likely to be stung on the tongue. Bring everything inside until the nest is dealt with.
Making the booking
Ring early for the best chance of a same-day visit. We offer same-day service but cannot promise it for every call. You can phone 0113 347 0014 or fill in the online booking form on the contact page.
The price is a fixed £90 for one nest, with £35 for each extra nest on the same property, and no call-out charge. You hear the price on the phone before anyone comes out, and nothing is done until you agree. If anyone in the family is allergic to wasp stings, say so when you book so it can be taken into account.
It helps to tell us where children play, where the dog goes and how the technician can reach the nest, so the visit can be planned around the household.
What the visit looks like with a family at home
Our technician is trained, and the work is fully insured. They will confirm the nest position with you, ask everyone to stay indoors or well clear and then carry out the treatment. Once it is done, they will explain what to expect and when the area can be used again.
Adults and children often like to watch from the window, which is fine, provided it stays closed. Please do not step outside to ask questions mid-job; wait until the technician comes to you.
Afterwards a few wasps may still hover around the old entrance. Keep children and pets away from there until you have been told it is fine. If you would like the empty nest taken down, ask when you book whether that is possible.
If you have other people coming to the house that day, such as a visitor with a pushchair or someone collecting the children, ask them to wait until the technician has finished, or to use a different entrance.
If someone is stung
Stay calm and move away from the area first. Wash the sting with water, remove the sting if you can see it and hold a cold pack against it. Most stings are painful but pass.
Call 999 straight away if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash. A person with a known allergy should speak to their GP about what to do in future.
