Wasp Nest in a Hedge or Bush – What Farnley Garden Owners Should Know

A nest in a shrub or hedge in spring is small and easy to overlook, but the colony grows quickly through the summer, so early notice makes for a simpler job.

The early signs in spring

A queen wasp starts a nest on her own from late April, depending on how mild the spring is, and the first stage is small, quiet and easy to miss. If you see one or two wasps repeatedly visiting the same part of a hedge or bush in spring, it is worth taking notice and arranging treatment rather than waiting.

At this stage, the nest may be little bigger than a golf ball, hanging from a stem or tucked inside a dense plant. Only the queen and a handful of early workers are there. Over the following weeks, the number of workers grows rapidly, and by high summer the colony can contain thousands.

This is why spring is a useful time to act. The job is the same fixed price whenever it is done, but you avoid a summer of avoiding half the garden.

What a spring queen looks like

Early-season wasps can be mistaken for something else, so it helps to know what to look for.

Keep your distance. A queen guarding her first cells is capable of stinging, so do not approach to look closer.

The temptation to deal with it yourself

A small nest can seem like a job for a rolled-up newspaper or a quick fix. It is not. The queen and early workers still defend the nest, and trying to remove it yourself near a thick shrub often leaves you in an awkward position with nowhere to retreat. A knocked nest can also leave wasps loose in the garden with nowhere to go.

Home methods may also drive the colony to rebuild elsewhere in the garden, or in the roof space or a wall, so you end up with a worse problem.

Leave it where it is and have it treated by a trained technician. The earlier it is dealt with, the less time the household spends worrying about it.

Spring jobs around hedges and shrubs

Spring is a busy time for pruning and tidying, so some care is needed.

If you find nothing, you can carry on as usual. Repeat the check a few weeks later, since new queens can be building at different times.

If anyone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and apply a cold pack. Call 999 if you see swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or trouble breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash. Anyone with a known allergy should speak to their GP, and please mention allergies when you book so we can take it into account.

Why waiting rarely helps

It is tempting to let a small nest go on the basis that it might not amount to much. Some people hope the queen will abandon it, or that the colony will fail. Occasionally nests do fail, but there is no way of telling which, and the cost of guessing wrong is a summer of stings and anxiety.

The colony grows through the summer and peaks in August, when a nest can hold 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps. Living with that near a door, a washing line or a play area is no fun. Wasps also become more of a nuisance around food and drink as the season goes on.

An early treatment is also easier to plan. The nest is usually in a more accessible spot, and you can still enjoy the garden with fewer restrictions. The price is the same fixed £90 whenever you book, but you will have saved yourself weeks of worry.

If you are not sure that what you have seen is a nest, ring and describe it. We would rather answer a question than have you stand next to a hedge and guess.

Booking a spring visit

Wasp Exterminator Leeds treats nests for a fixed £90, and an additional nest on the same property is £35. There is no call-out charge, we are open seven days a week, same-day service is offered and we cover Farnley and the surrounding area for homes and commercial customers. Each job is handled by a trained technician and is fully insured.

Phone us on 0113 347 0014 or use the contact page’s online booking form to arrange it. The price is confirmed on the phone before a visit, and nothing is done without your agreement. Tell us where in the hedge or bush the activity is and what you have seen. Afterwards, ask the technician when gardening can resume, and whether the empty nest can be taken down.

If you are lucky enough to catch a nest in its first weeks, make a note of the date and the exact spot, because it gives you a good idea of when to start looking next year. Queens often favour sheltered positions that have worked before, so the same corner of the garden deserves a look each spring. Checking regularly through April and May takes only a few minutes and keeps you ahead of the season.

Frequently asked questions

Does a small spring nest still need a technician?
Yes. Even a small nest has a queen and workers who will defend it, and removing it yourself is not safe.
Why do I see only one or two wasps at the start of the season?
Early on, the nest has only a queen and a few workers. Numbers climb quickly as the season goes on.
Will a nest started in spring in the hedge grow back after it is treated?
The treated nest will not be reused, but a new queen may choose another spot later. Look over the hedge now and then through the season.
