Why Are Wasps Flying Into Your Gledhow Home? Common Causes and Solutions

Is it a stray, or is it a colony? This decision guide takes you through five quick checks so you can choose the right response without guesswork.

Deciding what you are dealing with

A wasp has been in the house twice this week, and now you are wondering whether to ignore it, tidy up or pick up the phone. The honest answer depends on a handful of observations, and they take only a few minutes to make. This guide sets them out as a short series of checks, so you can reach a decision calmly instead of worrying.

You do not need any special knowledge. You need a window with a view of the outside, a pen, and a willingness to stand still at a safe distance. If you are in Gledhow or the surrounding area, the checks are the same as they would be anywhere.

Work through the five in order. Each one shifts the balance a little towards either strays or a nest.

Check one: how many, and over how long?

Count the wasps you see indoors across a whole day, and across several days. A wasp or two, spread over many hours, points to wanderers. A repeated flow, with new insects arriving every hour or so, points to a colony.

Wasps are not very tidy about it, so do not expect an exact number. What you are looking for is a trend. If it is increasing day by day, that is a warning sign, because a nest grows through the summer and reaches its peak in August, when it may hold 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more.

Also notice the time of day. Foragers drawn by food tend to appear around meals, or when something sweet is out. Nest traffic carries on through the warm parts of the day regardless of what you are doing in the kitchen. If the wasps do not seem to care whether you are cooking, eating or doing nothing, that is worth noting.

Check two: where do they come from?

Watch the point where they enter. Do they come through an open window, which you can close and test? Or do they appear from somewhere that is not an opening, such as a light fitting, a vent, a skirting board or a loft hatch? Wasps from nowhere in particular suggest a route from inside the structure.

Be careful about the temptation to follow them to find out. Standing under an eave or beside a hole to see where a wasp goes puts you in the flight path of the colony. Watch from a window or from several metres away, and let your eyes do the work. A pair of binoculars is better than a ladder.

If the entry point is an open window, the test is easy: close it for a day. A drop in numbers tells you the window was the route. No drop at all tells you the wasps are already inside the building.

Checks three to five

  1. Direction: from outside, do wasps fly in the same direction, along a straight line, day after day? A fixed line indicates a destination, which is often a nest.
  2. Food: if you remove every source of sweet food and drink for two days, do the visits stop? If yes, food was the cause. If no, look further.
  3. Sound and sight: do you hear buzzing from a wall or ceiling, or see wasps entering a gap in brickwork, eaves or the ground? If so, you have probably found the entrance.

Keep your notes short. Three ticks for nest-like behaviour is enough to justify getting a professional opinion, and one or none usually means you can carry on with simple housekeeping and watch for a few more days.

What the result tells you

If most checks point to strays, deal with the causes. Keep sweet food and drink covered, put lids on the bins, use mesh at open windows and let any visitor leave through a window. These are all quick jobs.

If most checks point to a nest, do not try to remove it. Keep everyone away from the area, close doors and windows near the entrance and do not block the hole. A disturbed nest can swarm and sting, and the colony may find another way into the house.

If you are in the middle, with a couple of ticks, watch for another day or two and repeat the checks. Late April onwards is when colonies are founded, depending on how mild the spring has been, so the chance of a nest rises as the season goes on.

Treat any allergy as a reason to act sooner. If someone in the household is allergic, tell us when you book and speak to your GP about what to do if they are stung. After a sting, wash the area, take out the sting if you can see it and apply a cold pack. Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash means calling 999.

Frequently asked questions

How soon should I act if I think there is a nest?
As soon as you are fairly sure. The colony grows through summer, so waiting makes it larger and the traffic heavier.
Could a single wasp mean a nest in my loft?
It could, but one wasp alone is rarely enough to say. Look for repeated visits from the same direction or from a fitting.
What if I only see wasps near the bin?
Then food is the likeliest draw. Close the lid, rinse the recycling and move the bin away from the door, then see if the numbers fall.
