Wasp Nest in a Cavity Wall – How Professionals Treat Hidden Nests in Harehills

A nest that went unnoticed in June can be very busy by August, and a hidden one in a cavity wall gives few warnings before the numbers become obvious.

The wall that went from quiet to busy

In June there was the odd wasp near the back wall and nobody thought twice. By the middle of August you cannot sit by that side of the house at all. There are dozens of wasps at one gap, a steady buzz in the afternoon, and a few inside the kitchen. Nothing has changed except time. The nest has had all summer to grow.

This is exactly how hidden colonies behave. The queen starts alone in late April or May, depending on how mild the spring has been. The first workers appear a few weeks later and take over foraging and building, and numbers climb quickly after that.

At that stage people often try to work out whether the nest is above or below the point where the wasps are seen. In a cavity it can be either, since the void connects different parts of the wall, and the entrance is not always close to the nest itself. That is another reason to leave the investigating to someone trained.

Why August is the crunch point

A colony usually reaches its peak in August. A nest can hold anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more by then, all of them coming and going through whatever opening the nest has. In a cavity wall, that opening is often a single small gap, so the traffic looks much denser than it would at a nest hanging in the open.

Late in the season wasps also change their habits. The workers are searching for sugary food more urgently, so they turn up at bins, drinks and the kitchen window, and tempers are shorter. This is when most stings happen.

It is worth knowing that the early workers are small and quiet. By high summer the colony has added layers of comb, and the numbers flying are simply much larger. The wall looks the same, but the activity at the gap does not.

Spotting a hidden nest earlier

The best defence is paying attention in early summer, before the colony is large. These are the signs to watch for:

Spotting any one of these in June or July, and ringing us then, is far easier than doing so in a crowded August.

Write the date when you first see wasps at the gap. If the traffic increases noticeably from one week to the next, that is a good sign of a growing colony and a reason to ring sooner rather than later. Early treatment also means fewer stings and fewer wasps wandering into kitchens.

If you are already in August

Do not despair. A large nest is dealt with in the same way as a small one, through the entry point that the wasps are using. The price does not change with the size of the colony. It is a fixed £90 per nest, £35 for an additional nest on the same property, confirmed on the phone before the visit, with no call-out charge.

We are open seven days a week, offer same-day service and cover Harehills and nearby areas. The technicians are trained, the work is fully insured, and domestic and commercial customers are both welcome. Nothing starts until you have agreed.

Many callers worry that a nest this size needs a more difficult job. What matters is access to the entrance, and the technician will talk to you about it. If there is something unusually hard about reaching the wall, we will explain that on the phone before any visit, rather than on the day.

Because the colony is large by then, the technician may ask you to stay indoors for the whole visit and keep every window on that side shut. Please follow that advice, even if the wasps seem calm from where you stand.

Staying safe in the meantime

Keep doors and windows near the entrance shut, and keep children and pets away from that wall. Cover bins and take drinks indoors when you finish with them. Do not swat or flap, as it only makes wasps more likely to sting.

Wash a sting with soap and water, remove it if visible and use a cold pack. If there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999. Anyone with a known allergy should tell us when booking and speak to their GP.

Do not sit out near the wall to watch for hours. A short look from a window is enough, and the longer you stay near the entrance, the more likely it is that you will be noticed.

Try not to wear dark clothing or strong scents if you have to be outside near the wall; wasps are drawn to both.

When the season turns

Colonies decline as the weather cools, but that is not a reason to wait. A busy nest in a wall remains a hazard until activity stops, and treating it sooner means fewer wasps near your home. Once the traffic ends, close the entry point and plan a spring check.

If you need to book, ring 0113 347 0014 or use the form on the contact page, and say where the wasps are going in.

The queens that will found next year's colonies leave in autumn. Most of the old nest dies off over winter, but a sealed and repaired wall means those queens have fewer places to choose from.

Frequently asked questions

Does a bigger nest cost more to treat?
No. Treatment of a nest is a fixed £90, and we confirm that on the phone before anyone visits.
Why do wasps get more aggressive in late summer?
Workers search harder for sweet food as the season goes on and the colony changes, so they are more likely to pester people and sting.
Can I wait until the cold weather kills the nest?
We would not advise it. The nest stays active for weeks, and until then it is a risk to anyone near the wall.
