Wasps vs Bees – How to Identify Them Before Arranging Pest Control in Kirkstall

Where insects go matters as much as what they look like. A few minutes watching the traffic to one spot can reveal a nest and hint at what lives in it.

A line of traffic above the garage door

A homeowner is carrying shopping in when something catches their eye: a steady procession of small insects slipping in and out of a narrow gap above the garage door. Nothing is buzzing around their head, and nobody has been stung. Yet it is obvious that something is going on, and the question quickly becomes whether it is a nest of wasps or a colony of bees that has settled in.

Learning to read that traffic is one of the most dependable ways to find out. It needs patience more than skill, and it can all be done from well outside the danger zone.

Setting up a safe watching spot

Choose a place at least a few metres from the opening, off to one side rather than directly in front or beneath it. A window, a doorway or a garden chair on the far side of a lawn will do. Avoid standing in the straight line between the entrance and the open sky, because that is the route the insects use.

Give yourself ten minutes and avoid sudden movements. Keep children and pets indoors while you do it, and do not rest a hand on the wall or brickwork near the opening. If anyone gets nervous, stop and go inside.

If you would rather not stand outside at all, a phone propped on a window sill and filming through glass does the same job.

What the flight path reveals

Wasps typically leave and return in quick, direct lines. Their approach is purposeful and sometimes a little jerky, and they often hover briefly at the entrance before dropping inside. At the busiest times, a small stream becomes a stream that is hard to count.

Honeybees tend to head off in a more regular pattern, climbing up and out over a slightly longer curve and returning heavily loaded. When they come back with pollen, you may see the bright baskets on their back legs. Bumblebees move slower again and in much smaller numbers, so a hole with only a handful of traffic and large, hairy insects is more likely to be bumblebees.

Notice, too, whether the insects seem to be carrying anything. Wasps coming home may hold small pellets of chewed matter or other food, while bees carry visible pollen. A scattering of fine wood shavings below an entrance, or fresh scrapings on a nearby fence, can hint at wasps gathering fibre for their paper.

One more thing to bear in mind is that early-morning and late-afternoon traffic is often lighter, while the middle of a warm day is busiest. If you are comparing days, try to watch at the same time so that the figures mean something.

Why this matters before you book

Many people want to protect bees, and rightly so. Honeybees and bumblebees are important to gardens and farmland, and we only treat wasps. If your watching suggests bees, please contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation. They may be able to give advice on a safe way forward, and in many cases the colony does not need to be disturbed at all.

If it looks like wasps, it is best to act sooner rather than later in the season. A colony that starts building in late April can grow substantially through the summer and peaks in August, when it may hold anywhere from two thousand to ten thousand wasps or more. Early action means a smaller job and a calmer household, although the fixed price does not change however large the colony is.

What your notes should include

Once you have watched for a while, write down the essentials so you do not have to rely on memory. The useful details are the height of the opening, the material around it, the time of day when you watched, and a rough count of insects passing in one minute. Even a vague number such as “a handful” or “dozens” helps.

Also note whether the traffic is one-way or two-way, and whether anything seems to be hanging around the entrance as if guarding it. Wasps sometimes loiter at the doorway. Bees often stand fanning near their entrance on hot days, which looks quite different.

Taking a short video from a distance can help as well. It records the pace and direction of flight far better than a photograph, and it means you do not need to keep standing at the window. You can then watch it again while describing the scene, which is easier than trying to recall everything while on the phone.

Booking the visit

Wasp nest treatment with Wasp Exterminator Leeds is a fixed £90 per nest, and an additional nest on the same property is £35. There is no call-out charge. We confirm the price on the phone first, and no work goes ahead until you have said yes. Our trained technicians are fully insured and we handle both domestic and commercial properties across Kirkstall and nearby areas.

Tell us what you saw during your watching session: the position of the opening, roughly how many insects passed in a minute, and whether any of them carried anything. The number to ring is 0113 347 0014, and the online form on the contact page works just as well. The lines are open seven days a week, and same-day service is available.

While you wait, keep doors and windows near the affected area closed if you can, and keep everyone away from the opening. If a family member is allergic to stings, let us know when you book so we can take it into account.

Should anyone be stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. Call 999 if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I watch an entrance?
About ten minutes is enough for a rough idea of the traffic. Stay well to the side, and stop straight away if any insects begin to follow you.
Do bees ever use holes in walls?
Honeybees sometimes settle in wall cavities and similar gaps. If the insects look golden-brown and hairy rather than glossy and yellow-and-black, speak to a beekeeper.
Is it a problem if I only see a few insects?
Not necessarily, but numbers rise through the summer. A small, steady flow to one gap is still worth describing to us.
