How to Tell If You Have an Active Wasp Nest on Your Lawnswood Property

Sheds, garages and garden stores are quiet, sheltered and rarely visited, which makes them popular with nesting wasps. Check before you open the door.

Before you open the shed door

You reach for the lawnmower, only to find a wasp crawling on the inside of the shed window. You open the door a little wider, and another flies past your ear. It is a surprisingly common way for homeowners to discover a nest: not through careful observation, but by walking into one.

Outbuildings are attractive to wasps. They are dry, undisturbed, full of nooks and often have small gaps around the door, roof felt and eaves. In Lawnswood, as elsewhere, a shed, garage or summer house that has not been opened for a few weeks can quietly become a nest site.

This guide explains how to check for a nest before you go inside, which signs to trust and why it is wise to leave the door shut if you are unsure.

Gaps around door frames and under the eaves are small, but a queen only needs a tiny opening to get started.

Look from the outside first

Walk slowly around the outbuilding at a distance of a few metres. Look at the roof edge, gaps between boards, the top of the door frame, vents and any holes in cladding or felt. Pay particular attention to the sunny side, where wasps may favour warmth.

Watch the building for ten minutes on a warm day. A shed with a nest typically has a steady flow of wasps going in and out of a single gap, while an empty shed attracts none. If you see wasps flying from a gap in the roof edge towards the garden and others returning, you have your answer without going near.

If you spot a wasp or two inside against the window glass, but none outside, they may have come in via a hole and be trying to escape from a nest within.

Do not forget the less obvious buildings: a summer house, a playhouse, a log store, a pergola with a solid roof or a carport with boxed-in sides. All are worth a look.

Listen as well as look. Stand a couple of metres from the wall with the door closed and stay quiet for half a minute. A steady hum from inside a shed in warm weather is rarely anything else.

Clues inside, seen through a window

If the building has a window, take a look from outside using your phone torch or a zoom lens, and avoid putting your face against the glass. A nest may be visible hanging from a rafter, fixed to the corner of the roof or attached to the underside of a shelf. It will look like a ball of grey papery material, often with an opening at the bottom.

Any of these, combined with traffic outside, is enough to treat the building as off limits.

Keep any observations short. There is no need to linger near the building, and a calm, quick check from a distance is safer than a long one.

Why stored items make it riskier

A cluttered shed or garage gives wasps countless places to hide, such as behind folded garden chairs, inside old flower pots, in stacked boxes and in the folds of tarpaulin. It also means you may be moving things around, and each movement may jolt the nest.

If you must retrieve something urgently, think hard about whether you really need it. A mower can be replaced for a day; a swarm of wasps in a confined space is hard to escape. Keep the door closed, and if you do see wasps inside, do not shut yourself in with them.

Warn anyone else in the household and put a note on the door. Children are especially likely to open it without thinking.

If the building is attached to the house, close any internal door that leads into it and keep that door closed until the nest has been dealt with.

If the nest looks old or empty

Wasp colonies die off in the cold months. When you open a shed in winter or early spring and find a papery ball tucked in a corner, it may be the remains of last year’s nest, since nests are not generally reused.

Even so, the safest course is to leave it alone and let a technician take a look. A mild spell can bring a few wasps out of hiding, and in a dim shed it is hard to judge how active a nest is. Treat every papery lump with respect.

You might also find insect remains and a scattering of paper pieces on the floor; that tells you what was there, but not whether it is empty now.

Arranging help

Tell the technician where the building is, which side the entrance appears to be and whether there are any other gaps. If it is a detached garage or a shed at the back of the plot, mention any narrow access routes.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to quickly grab something from the shed?
If you have seen wasps entering or inside the building, we would advise against it. A nest can react very quickly to movement and noise.
The nest in my shed looks dead. Can I clear it myself?
It is hard to be certain a nest is empty by sight alone, so we would not recommend touching it. Ask the technician whether the empty nest can be taken down.
What if the wasps are coming in through a gap in the garage door?
Wasps entering through a gap may be coming from a nest outside or inside the building. Watch from a distance to see which, and tell us what you observe when you book.
