Wasp Nests Under Roof Tiles – A Common Problem for Lofthouse Homes

Knowing what happens on the day makes the whole process easier, from the phone call through to the final check, so here is how a roof-tile nest visit goes.

The answer: a short, straightforward visit

Treating a wasp nest under roof tiles is a short job for a trained technician, and it needs very little from you. The most helpful thing you can do is to prepare the ground, keep everyone away from the nest and make sure the technician can get to the right spot.

This article follows the process in order, from the first phone call to what you do afterwards, so that nothing about the visit feels unfamiliar.

Why preparation matters

Most of what makes a visit go well happens before the technician arrives. A clear route, closed windows and pets indoors let the work start without delay. They also lower the chance of anyone being stung while the technician is busy. None of it is complicated, and all of it is within your control.

The visit itself is short, but the nest is a serious matter for the household, so it is worth a little care.

When you ring, we ask where the wasps are going, how high the entrance is and whether you have seen more than one nest. We also ask whether anyone in the household is allergic to wasp stings, so we can take that into account.

The price is confirmed during the call. A nest is a fixed £90, and a further nest at the same address is £35. There is no call-out charge. We do not send anyone out until you have agreed, and the technician does no work on arrival without your say-so. If same-day service is possible and you want it, say so on the call.

The technician has to get to the spot, and the path to it is not always obvious. Side gates may be locked, cars may be parked tight to the wall, and gardens can be full of obstacles. Take a few minutes before the visit to clear a path, unlock gates and move anything fragile.

Tell the technician about any hazards, such as an unstable shed roof, a low conservatory or a steep slope. They will take care in any case, but the more they know, the better. If you share a drive or path with a neighbour, a quick word beforehand avoids confusion.

Preparing before the technician arrives

A few minutes of preparation help the visit go smoothly.

  1. Keep pets and children indoors, away from the side of the house with the nest.
  2. Close the windows nearest the roofline.
  3. Clear any garden furniture, toys or bins from the area below the entrance.
  4. Make sure there is a clear way to the spot, whether through a side gate or past a parked car.
  5. Note where the wasps go in so you can point it out.

If you have a shed, extension or garage roof under the nest, mention it. Those can matter for access.

The technician will ask where you have seen the wasps and take a look at the position of the entrance from a safe distance. They will agree with you how best to reach it. If the nest is in a position that requires special access equipment, that will have been agreed with you on the phone beforehand.

You can stay indoors and carry on with your day. There is no need to supervise from below the nest, and it is better if you do not. Wasps are most active around the entrance, and a person standing in the flight path makes the job harder.

If something changes before the visit

Sometimes a nest becomes more obvious between the call and the visit. Wasps may appear indoors, you may spot a second entrance or someone may be stung. Ring and tell us, so the technician knows what to expect. If a second nest turns up on the same property, it is £35 and can be dealt with during the same visit. If anyone shows signs of a serious allergic reaction, call 999 straight away.

The technician is the right person to answer questions about your particular nest, so use the visit. Common questions include whether the entrance is the only one, whether the empty nest can be taken down and when it is sensible to repair the roof. If you have concerns about children or pets, raise them too.

There is no charge for asking, and the technician would rather you asked than guessed.

Afterwards: the first few hours

Some wasps that were out foraging when the visit was carried out may return to the roofline for a short time, so a few stragglers around the area afterwards are normal. Keep away from the spot and do not try to block the gap straight away.

Ask the technician anything you want to know before they leave, including whether the empty nest can be taken down and what is sensible about repairs. A roofer can close the gap in due course, once the nest is no longer active.

In the days after a visit, you may see the odd wasp near the roofline as the last foragers return, and that is normal. If you see a lot of them, or wasps indoors, ring us. Keep windows near the spot closed for a short while, wipe up any spilled drinks and keep rubbish tightly bagged.

Once things are calm, arrange for any repair work. A trained roofer will know what to do about a displaced tile or a gap in a board.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be at home throughout the visit?
Discuss this when booking. We will confirm how the technician will reach the nest and whether you need to be there.
Can I have two nests treated in the same visit?
Yes, tell us about both when booking. The second nest on the same property is £35.
What if I am not sure which part of the roof the wasps are using?
Give us your best description. The technician will look at the roofline and find the entrance, and you do not need to be certain beforehand.
