Wasp Nest in a Cavity Wall – How Professionals Treat Hidden Nests in Lovell Park
When wasps start coming out of a skirting board or a gap around a socket rather than a window, the nest is almost certainly in the structure of the building.
Wasps coming through the wall into the room
You come downstairs to find three wasps on the window and, oddly, another walking along the top of the skirting board. There is no open window and you have not seen them arrive. The next day you notice one pushing out from behind a plug socket. They are not entering the house from outside. They are entering from inside the wall.
This happens when a nest in the cavity has a second route, usually a small gap where a cable, a pipe or the edge of a board leaves the void. Wasps that cannot find the outside entrance follow the light and the warmth into your room.
It is worth stressing how ordinary this is. Wasps arriving indoors from a wall can look alarming, but it does not mean the entire house is infested. It generally means one nest with one or two overflow routes.
The same thing can happen in a loft conversion or an extension, where new plasterboard sits close to old brickwork. The detail does not matter; if wasps emerge from a surface that is not an obvious opening, report it.
Where the gaps tend to be
Anywhere that a service passes through a wall can leave a path. Check these places without touching them:
- Around sockets and switches on outside walls
- Along the join between skirting and floor
- Beside pipes where they go through a wall or floor
- Corners where the ceiling meets the wall
Lights off and a torch from across the room will make it easier to see wasps against the surface. Keep your hands off the socket itself, as water, wasps and live wiring is a poor combination.
If the wasps are emerging from a wall in a flat or a shared stairwell, tell neighbours and the managing agent as well, because the void may continue into the next property and the nest may not be in your own home at all.
Look at the ceiling light fittings too, since a gap around a rose can be an exit just as a socket can.
What to do in the room
Close the door of the room and keep it shut. Do not try to fill the gap with tape, filler or foil, because blocking it while the nest is active just sends the wasps looking for the next opening. Do not put anything into the gap. If wasps are indoors, open a window and let them leave.
Move beds, sofas and anything else away from the wall so the technician has clear access.
Dark rooms can be the worst because wasps are drawn to the window. If you have to enter the room, do it quickly and calmly, keep your arms still and avoid wearing strong perfume, which can attract them. Avoid leaving food and drink on surfaces in the room, as sugary drinks left open will draw wasps in.
Resist the urge to put a bowl, a bottle or any kind of trap under the gap. It will not reduce the colony and can draw in more insects.
Wasps indoors: a short sequence
If wasps are already in your home, a calm routine is the safest way through it.
- Shut the door of the affected room and keep everyone else out of it
- Open a window so that loose wasps can leave on their own
- Do not swat, as a wasp near a window with nowhere to go is more likely to sting
- Note where they appeared from and take a photo from a distance if you can
- Phone us to describe what you have seen so we can discuss the visit
If someone is stung, wash the area with soap and water, remove the sting if you can see it, and apply a cold pack. For swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999. People who know they react badly to stings should speak to their GP.
How we deal with an indoor leak from a cavity nest
The indoor wasps are a symptom. The nest itself is treated at its main entrance, which is usually on the outside of the wall, and we will ask on the phone where you have seen most activity. Our price is fixed at £90 per nest and £35 for each additional nest on the same property, confirmed before anyone visits, with no call-out charge. We are open seven days a week, offer same-day service and cover the Lovell Park area.
Trained technicians carry out the work, fully insured, on domestic or commercial properties alike. If anyone in the household is allergic to stings, say so at booking.
Because the indoor appearances are linked to the cavity, there is no point in chasing individual wasps around the room. Dealing with the source is what stops new ones appearing, and the technician will check where else wasps may have strayed.
Do not be surprised if the technician asks about other rooms on the same wall, upstairs or down, as the void can run behind more than one.
Closing up after treatment
Once the activity has ended, the indoor gaps can be sealed with the right filler or sealant and the outside entrance closed. Do this after the wasps have stopped, not during. If you are renting, check with your landlord or agent how repairs are arranged under your tenancy agreement.
Check the same places again in late spring. A hidden route is easy to forget until wasps are back at the window.
Do not try to remove or open the skirting board, plug or switch yourself before this. It disturbs the nest and takes you straight into the path of the wasps.
If you decorate afterwards, wait until the area is completely dry and the gap sealed before you paint or paper over it, so the repair is not hidden.
