Why Are Wasps Flying Into Your Methley Home? Common Causes and Solutions

A hole in the lawn, a bank or a flowerbed can hide a busy nest. Here is how to recognise a ground nest and why it can send wasps into your home.

The nest you may be walking past

Not every wasp nest hangs from a roof. Many colonies are built underground, usually in an old burrow left by a small animal, a gap beneath a shed or patio, or a hollow under tree roots. From above, all you can see is a hole about the size of a coin or a golf ball, and a steady flow of wasps going in and out.

This matters if wasps are coming into your house, because a ground nest in the garden can send workers to the back door, the kitchen window and the washing line. They are not chasing you; they are foraging, and a house with food smells on the air is simply a good place to forage. The entrance can be beside a path, at the base of a hedge, in a flowerbed or under a shrub.

Because ground nests are low and hidden, they are often found by accident, when someone cuts the grass or digs a border and the colony responds.

A tell-tale sign is wasps that arrive in the garden from the same patch of ground every morning once the day warms up. In cooler weather they take longer to appear, but the pattern remains.

Spotting an underground entrance safely

Do the checking from a distance, and in daylight. You are looking for:

Stand well back, at least several metres, and do not shine a torch into the hole or stamp near it. Vibration is enough to bring the guards out. If children or pets use that part of the garden, bring them in, and mark the area with a bucket or a chair placed from a safe distance if it can be done without going close.

Mark the spot in your mind by a fixed object such as a fence post or a paving slab, so that you can describe the position accurately when you ring.

Why it ends up inside your house

A nest in the garden does not need to be near the door to cause trouble indoors. Workers cover a good distance when they forage. If they pick up the scent of cooked food, sweet drinks, rubbish or fruit, they can find an open door or window and drift inside. Once in, they bump against the glass, and you notice a pattern: more wasps on warm afternoons, and more at certain windows.

The season shapes this too. Wasps start building from late April depending on the weather and the mildness of the spring. The colony grows through the summer and peaks in August, so a modest number of wasps in early summer can turn into a constant presence by the end of it.

If you have seen both a hole in the ground and wasps inside the house, treat the two as connected. Tidying up the kitchen will help, but it will not take away the source.

Barbecues, paddling pools and washing lines near the nest all put people in the path of the flight line. If you notice wasps near these, move them away from the area while you wait for a visit.

Garden jobs to avoid until it is sorted

While a ground nest is active, change what you do in that part of the garden.

If you have already disturbed a nest and wasps are swarming, walk away steadily, cover your face if you can, and get indoors. Do not wave your arms or run in circles. Once indoors, shut the doors and windows. Wash any stings, remove a sting if it is visible and use a cold pack. If anyone develops swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999.

Getting it dealt with

A ground nest is a job for a trained technician. The fixed price is £90 per nest, or £35 for an additional nest on the same property, with no call-out charge. We confirm the price on the phone before the technician visits, and we do no work until you have agreed. We are open seven days a week, offer same-day service and handle both domestic and commercial properties, covering Methley and the surrounding villages. Our team is trained, and we are fully insured for the work we do.

When you phone, describe where the hole is relative to the house, shed or fence, how many wasps you can see at once and whether anyone in the family has an allergy. If so, tell us at booking so we can take it into account. You can ring 0113 347 0014 or use the online booking form on the contact page.

If the nest is under a shed, decking or patio, mention it. Access can affect how we plan the visit, and it helps to know before the technician arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the entrance to a ground nest?
It is often only a small round hole, perhaps the size of a coin or a golf ball, with wasps flying in and out. The nest below can be much larger than the opening suggests.
Will wasps from a garden nest attack me indoors?
Wasps indoors are mostly looking for light and a way out. They sting if they feel threatened, so stay calm, avoid swatting and let them leave through an open window.
Can I just fill in the hole?
No. Blocking the entrance can anger the colony and push wasps to find another exit, possibly towards your home. Leave it alone and book a technician.
