When Is Wasp Season in Middleton?

A simple checklist, season by season, shows homeowners where to look for wasp nests and when, so that problems are caught long before they turn into a noisy August crisis.

A year of wasp checks in four stops

You do not need to watch for wasps all year. Four short checks, one in each season, cover the spots that matter and the weeks when they matter. Nests are active from spring to autumn, so winter is for preparation, and the rest of the calendar is for observation.

The approach works for any house, flat or bungalow in Middleton, a suburb of Leeds, and it takes only a few minutes each time. Pick a dry, calm day and look from a safe distance.

Keep a simple log on the fridge or in your phone. Write the date, the place and what you saw. When you do need to ring, that information makes the call much quicker and more useful.

A cautious approach does not mean being anxious. The aim is to learn the routine and enjoy the garden with confidence, knowing you have looked at the right places at the right times.

Spring check: outside the building

Queens begin building from late April, depending on how mild the spring is. The nest is tiny, so the signs are small. Walk around the exterior with a few spots in mind.

You are looking for one thing: a wasp that flies purposefully to the same hole. If you see that, note the spot and the time of day.

If you find nothing, that is a good result and the check is complete. If you see a possible gap but are not sure, mark the spot in your mind and look again in a week. The pattern of repeated visits is the key evidence.

Early summer check: inside the building

By June the colony has workers and the nest is growing. A nest in a roof or wall may now give itself away from the inside. Go up to the loft if it is safe and easy to reach, and listen as much as look. A faint papery rustle or a steady hum from a wall or ceiling is worth noting.

Look at the ceiling beneath the loft for brown stains or damp-looking patches, which can show a nest pressing close to the surface. Do not open the loft hatch wide if you can hear a lot of activity, and do not shine a torch at an entrance. Close it and call.

In flats and maisonettes, loft spaces may be shared or inaccessible. Where you cannot get to the roof void, pay attention to what you can hear in the top-floor ceilings and walls, and report anything unusual to whoever manages the building. Who is responsible for a nest in a shared building depends on your lease or tenancy agreement, so check the paperwork.

If you see wasps indoors on a bright summer day, they are often heading for a window and not a nest. Several wasps coming back inside at different times of day, however, points to an entrance somewhere close, perhaps in the roof space or around a window frame.

Late summer check: the garden and the bins

From August the sweet-seeking behaviour begins, and wasps appear around bins, compost, fruit and drinks. Check the outdoor spots again, particularly where wasps seem to be arriving from. A line of flight can lead you to a nest in a hedge, a bank or a hole in the ground.

The colony is now at its peak, with a nest holding 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps. That means extra care: no mowing close to a suspected nest, no blocking holes and no children playing nearby.

It is a good moment, too, to look at the tops of fences and walls, the underside of decking and any hollow garden ornaments or planters, all of which can be used by wasps in the later part of summer.

Pay attention to which direction the wasps are heading when they leave. If they seem to head over your fence, do not climb or reach over to look. Describe the direction and let the technician take it from there.

Autumn and winter: tidy up and plan

In autumn the colony fades and the nest is abandoned. It will not be reused, so you do not need to worry about the same nest returning. Use the quieter months to deal with the gaps and cracks that made your property attractive, and ask the technician at booking whether any empty nest can be taken down.

In winter there is little to see. Put a note in the diary for late April, and the cycle starts again.

Common repair jobs include filling small gaps in brickwork, repairing damaged soffits and keeping vents in good order. Always make sure no wasps are using a gap before you seal it, because trapping a colony inside a wall can push the wasps into the building.

A final tidy in November is worth doing: clear gutters, check roof edges after the storms and repair any damaged fascia boards. Not every gap is a risk, but the ones around the eaves are the likeliest to be chosen.

When to ring

Call as soon as you have a nest in view, whatever the month. The price is a fixed £90 per nest, £35 for each additional nest on the same property, confirmed on the phone before the visit and agreed before any work is done.

Same-day service is offered seven days a week, there is no call-out fee, and homes and businesses are both covered. Our phone line is 0113 347 0014, and the contact page has a booking form. Please tell us if anyone in the household is allergic to wasp stings.

The technician will ask a few questions about the position of the nest, such as whether it is in the loft, a wall, a shed or the ground, so have your notes ready.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to go into the loft if I think there is a nest?
Only if you cannot hear or see much activity. If it sounds busy, close the hatch and keep clear until it has been treated.
What do brown stains on a ceiling mean?
They can sometimes show a nest pressing close to the surface, though they can have other causes. Mention them when you call.
Do I need to check every month?
No. A short check in spring, early summer and late summer covers the key stages.
