Wasp Nest in a Cavity Wall – How Professionals Treat Hidden Nests in Miles Hill
If you have never had a hidden nest dealt with, it helps to know how the visit unfolds, from the first phone call to the sealed wall.
The call, and what you are asked
You ring because wasps are going in and out of a gap in the outside wall and you do not know what to expect. The first conversation is simple. We ask where on the property the wasps are, whether you can see an entrance, whether any have come indoors and whether anyone at the address is allergic to stings.
At the end, the price is confirmed on the phone: £90 for the nest, or £35 for an additional nest on the same property if you have two. There is no call-out charge, and nothing is done until you have agreed.
If you have photographed the wall, mention it. If you have not, a description is quite enough: which side of the house, how high, and whether the gap is in brick, an air brick or a joint.
The person on the phone will not rush you, and you can ask anything you like about how the visit works before you decide.
Before the technician arrives
There is not much to prepare. Keep children and pets indoors, close windows on the affected side and move anything stored against the wall. If you can show the technician the exact gap, let them know when they arrive, but do not stand close to point at it.
- Clear a path to the wall, especially gates and side passages
- Put away washing, toys and furniture
- Leave bins and ladders out of the way
- Tell us if a neighbour's property shares the wall
Anyone with a shared drive or alleyway should warn neighbours that a technician is visiting, so nobody wanders into the area during the work. Close the gate to the garden if you have a pet that might be let out.
It is also a good idea to charge your phone and keep it with you. The technician may want to ring to ask a quick question, and you may want to ring us if something looks different from what you were told.
Do not remove or tidy plants right next to the wall on the day. Disturbing shrubs and climbers near the entrance can make wasps react.
On site
The technician starts by watching the wall and confirming which gap is active. They are looking at the pattern of wasp traffic. Then, protected and working carefully, they treat the nest through that entrance. The cavity does not have to be opened. The aim is for the activity to stop and for the nest not to be reused.
We cover Miles Hill and nearby areas, open seven days a week with same-day service, and both domestic and commercial customers can book. Every technician is trained, and the work is fully insured. If you are at home, the technician will tell you which doors and windows to keep closed.
Nests inside wall cavities can be hard to judge from outside, so the technician relies on what the wasps themselves are doing. Where the traffic is heaviest is where the treatment is carried out. You do not need to watch, and indoors is the best place to be.
The visit is not a sales pitch; the technician is there to deal with the nest, tell you honestly what they find and answer your questions.
What you can expect afterwards
Some wasps that were out of the nest when it was treated may continue to return for a short while. Do not be alarmed if you see a few at the entrance in the following days, but do keep clear of the wall. If activity still looks the same after a good spell of warm weather, call us and describe what you can see.
Ask the technician at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down. They can advise you on what is practical for your wall.
Keep notes: when you last saw wasps at the entrance, and how many. It gives a useful comparison if you need to ring back.
A common question is whether the wasps will be angry. The wasps that return to the nest after treatment are going to behave like wasps usually do around a disturbed site, which is to say nervously. Stay clear of the entrance for a few days, close the window nearest the gap and let things settle.
Sealing and repairs
When the traffic at the entrance has fully stopped, close the gap with filler, mortar or a suitable cover, depending on what it is. If it is an air brick, keep ventilation in place. A tidy repair costs very little and prevents a repeat visit by a queen looking for a nest site next spring.
If you rent, your tenancy agreement decides who is responsible for repairs, so check it or ask the landlord. If you are in a shared building, tell the managing agent.
Where a wall is part of a shared building, the repair may be the responsibility of the owner or managing agent. Your lease or tenancy agreement sets that out, not us.
Booking and next steps
If you have noticed a steady stream of wasps at a wall, do not wait to see whether it improves. The colony grows through the summer and reaches its peak in August, and the earlier it is treated the less time it has to spread. Ring 0113 347 0014 or use the online form on the contact page, give us a short description and we will take it from there.
If you manage a business, mention opening hours, deliveries and any customers likely to be near the wall on the day, so the visit can be planned to fit.
