Wasp Nest in a Cavity Wall – How Professionals Treat Hidden Nests in Roundhay
Most stings from a wall nest come from well-meaning attempts at a quick fix, so here are the common ones and the calmer alternatives.
The Saturday-morning plan
It is a bright Saturday, the wasps are going in and out of the wall again, and a trip to the shop for something from a can seems like a reasonable plan. By lunchtime there are angry wasps around the back door and a sting on the ankle. This is one of the most common routes into a bad experience with a nest.
Wasps in a cavity wall are hard to deal with without training. You cannot see the nest, you cannot judge its size, and you are working in front of the entrance.
Once a colony has been provoked, its workers can follow a person for some distance and sting repeatedly. That is why a quick retreat indoors is the right response, not a dash across the lawn. Close the door behind you, and stay put for a while.
The difference with a trained technician is not bravery but preparation. They know where to stand, what to wear and how to approach the entrance, none of which can be picked up in a lunch break from a can's label.
Myths worth dropping
Several ideas circulate about wasp nests, and most of them lead people into trouble.
- Myth: a nest in the wall is small. A cavity can hold a large colony.
- Myth: wasps are calm at dusk, so it is safe to approach. They can still defend the entrance.
- Myth: the nest will die out by itself soon. It stays active for weeks.
- Myth: smoke or noise will drive them away. It usually provokes them.
Treat these as reasons to step back, not as shortcuts.
Another assumption is that a wall nest is somehow less dangerous because it is hidden. The truth is the opposite. You cannot see the numbers involved, and the first indication of trouble is a swarm at the entrance.
Some people are surprised to learn that even a modest number of wasps at the entrance can mean a very large colony behind it. The wasps you see are only the ones outside at that moment, while the rest are working or resting in the cavity.
Why a hidden nest is harder
With a nest hanging from a branch, you can see its size and position. In a wall the colony is out of view, behind brick and insulation. That is why professional treatment through the entry point is the sensible route: the technician is trained, equipped for it and knows what to look out for.
Making holes in the wall, or removing an air brick to see inside, opens a path from the nest to your living space. Please leave the wall as it is.
There is also the matter of the house itself. Taking away an air brick, chipping out mortar or prising off cladding can damage the building and does not solve the underlying problem.
Weigh up the small saving against the risk. A fixed price of £90 is set against a possible trip to a doctor, a ruined weekend and a nest that is still there afterwards.
Think too about neighbours. A disturbed nest sends wasps over fences, and a quick fix that goes wrong affects everyone along the row.
What you can usefully do
There is plenty that does help. Watch from a distance and note which gap is being used. Keep the family away from that side of the house. Close windows. Bring in food and drink. Take a photo from far back. All of these make the visit simpler.
Then ring. A nest is a fixed £90, with £35 for each additional nest on the same property, confirmed before anyone comes. There is no call-out charge. We are open seven days a week with same-day service, cover Roundhay and the surrounding area, and the work is by trained technicians and fully insured. Domestic and commercial customers are welcome.
It is also worth being clear about the things we do not do. We treat wasps. For honeybees or bumblebees, contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation, and do not attempt anything yourself.
Treat any advice that involves getting close to the entrance with suspicion, however confident the person giving it sounds. The people who handle wasp nests regularly all stand well away from the opening until they are prepared.
If you have already tried something
Do not be embarrassed. Tell us what you did when you ring, so the technician knows what to expect, including if you blocked the gap or disturbed the entrance. It is useful information and affects how they approach the wall.
If you have been stung, wash the spot, remove the sting if visible and cool it. For swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999.
We will not judge a failed attempt. Wasp nests are tricky, and anyone can be caught out. What matters is that you are safe and the nest is dealt with.
One more thing: do not flood the area with strong-smelling products to mask the nest. It does not help, and may make nearby wasps more irritable.
Afterwards
When the nest has been dealt with and activity has stopped, seal the entry point so that it cannot be used again. Raise the empty nest with the technician at booking, too. If you rent, check your tenancy agreement for who arranges repairs.
If you would like a visit, the number is 0113 347 0014, or you can use the online booking form on the contact page.
For next year, a short spring check on the gaps in the wall costs nothing, and a quick repair is the best DIY job of all.
