Do Wasps Return to the Same Nest Every Year? A Guide for Sheffield Gardens

Finding and dealing with one nest does not always settle things for the season, so understanding why a second can appear, and how it is priced, helps you plan calmly.

Assuming one nest is the whole story

The mistake we want to describe is one of counting. A householder finds a nest, has it treated, relaxes and then a few weeks later finds wasps again. The natural conclusion is that the first nest came back. It did not. Wasps do not reuse nests, and a treated or finished nest is gone for good.

What has happened is more ordinary. Several queens start nests each spring, and they can choose different spots on the same property or on neighbouring ones. A garden with a sheltered shed, a hollow bank and a gap under the eaves may host two or three in the same summer.

Knowing this means you can plan for more than one, and not be surprised or discouraged when it happens.

There is some reassurance in this. A second nest does not mean your first treatment failed, and it does not mean the property is cursed. It reflects the way a spring queen season works, with many founders spread over a wide area.

Why more than one nest can appear

A queen picks her site alone. She has no way of knowing that another queen has already built nearby, so features that suit one often suit others. The result is a cluster of small nests started around the same time.

This is why a thorough look round the whole property, not just the first problem spot, is worth the time.

Time is a factor as well. Queens do not all emerge on the same day, and nests do not grow at the same rate. A nest started in early May and one started in late May can look very different in July, and the second one may escape notice for weeks because it is small and quiet.

A systematic walk round the property

When one nest has been found, use it as a reason for a proper survey instead of a reason to relax. Choose a calm moment, preferably in the cooler part of the day, and stay at a distance from any activity.

If you find a second nest, do not go closer to investigate. Note it and tell the technician when you book, so that both can be dealt with in one visit.

Do your survey in the same order each time, so you do not miss a section. Many people check the front of the house and forget the back, or the shed and forget the greenhouse. A simple route, noted on your page, solves that.

Look for activity rather than for nests. You will see a stream of wasps long before you see the nest itself.

How the price works for more than one nest

The pricing for more than one nest is simple. A nest costs a fixed £90, and each additional nest on the same property is £35. If you have two, that is £90 plus £35, and the total is confirmed on the phone before a technician visits. There is no call-out charge. No work is done until you have agreed the price.

Telling us about all the nests you can see at the time of booking helps, because it means a single visit can cover everything. If you find another one afterwards, you can ring again and describe it in the same way.

This is also a practical reason to check early in the season. In Sheffield, as anywhere else, nests found in May and June are easier to describe and easier to reach than nests discovered at the August peak, when 2,000 to 10,000 or more wasps may be in residence.

A small point about access is worth raising. If the second nest is somewhere that needs separate equipment, such as the roof space as opposed to the lawn, tell us so when you phone. The price stays the same, but the technician can plan the visit properly.

Booking and looking ahead

Wasp Exterminator Leeds treats nests for domestic and commercial customers, and is open seven days a week with same-day service. The people doing the work are trained, and it is fully insured. Phone 0113 347 0014, or use the booking form on the contact page. Tell us when you book if anyone is allergic to stings, and ask whether empty nests can be taken down afterwards.

Once the season has ended, write down where every nest was. Next spring, from late April, check each of those places first, then the rest of the property. A page of notes listing two or three spots, with dates, is the best tool you can have.

Finally, repair gaps in the cold months. A fresh queen has fewer places to choose from, and the chance of multiple nests next year is lower. It is not a guarantee, but it is a sensible way to use the winter.

Keep the page where you will find it. A note in a drawer in October is useful in April only if you can lay your hands on it, so put it with the household papers or save it on your phone.

What does an additional nest cost?
An additional nest on the same property is £35, on top of £90 for the first. We confirm the total on the phone before anyone visits.
Do I need to find every nest before I ring?
