Why Are Wasps Flying Into Your Sturton Grange Home? Common Causes and Solutions

Wasps follow smells, and a bin, compost heap or fruit tree outside can bring them to your door. Here is how to remove the draw and what to do if that fails.

The cause is often just outside the door

When wasps enter a house, the reason is frequently sitting a few metres from the back door. A wheelie bin with a lid that does not quite close, a compost caddy, a heap of windfall apples or a stack of unrinsed recycling will all hold a smell that wasps pick up on the air. They arrive to feed, find the source, and when the back door happens to be open, they follow the scent inside.

This is good news in one sense. Unlike a nest in a wall, an outdoor attraction is something you can fix with a few minutes' work. If the wasps are at their busiest around the bins or the fruit and you see few anywhere else, the nest may not be on your property at all. The wasps may simply have found a food source on their wider foraging trip.

The aim of this article is to help you test that, step by step.

Work through the outdoor attractions

Take a slow walk around the outside of the house, and check each item on this list.

Do this over a few days and watch what happens. If the wasps near the back door thin out, you have found the cause. Keep up the routine until the season is over.

For compost bins that are open at the base, a layer of dry leaves, cardboard or garden clippings over fresh kitchen waste reduces the smell that escapes. Wasps will visit rotting fruit even at the bottom of a heap, so take extra care in late summer.

Move the temptation, then watch the doors

Where you cannot remove a temptation, such as a fruit tree that drops apples every year, you can move the activity away from the house. Keep the bins at the side of the garden rather than beside the kitchen door, and stand them on a hard surface that you can rinse. Collect fallen fruit in a covered container and take it away from the building.

Next, consider the doors. If the back door is open while you work outside, a wasp can drift in from the garden without any trouble. A fly screen, a bead curtain or simply closing the door while you carry things out will reduce the number of strays.

When you have done all that, spend a day or two watching quietly from a window or the edge of the patio. You are looking for a pattern. Wasps that come to the bins, circle and leave are foragers. Wasps that arrive at a fixed point on the building, disappear and come back soon afterwards are workers using a nest.

A quick round with a bin liner for any dropped fruit also keeps the lawn safe for bare feet, which matters if children play outside in warm weather.

Signs the problem is more than the bins

Suspect a nest if:

A nest can sit in many places: a gap under the roof edge, a cavity wall, a chimney, a tree, a bush or a hole in the ground. Wasps begin building from late April depending on the weather and how mild the spring is, and the colony expands through the summer before peaking in August.

Do not approach it. Wasps from a disturbed colony can swarm and sting, and a ground nest can be disturbed simply by someone mowing the lawn. Mark the area off if you can do so from a distance, keep children and pets away, and make a note of exactly where the wasps are going.

Photographs taken from a safe distance, showing the wall, roof edge or bush where you see activity, can be useful when you describe the problem on the phone.

What happens when you book

Our price is fixed at £90 per nest, and £35 for an additional nest on the same property. There is no call-out charge. We confirm the price on the phone before a technician visits and do no work until you agree. We are open seven days a week, can offer same-day service, and look after both homes and commercial premises across Sturton Grange and surrounding areas. Those who attend are trained, and our work is covered by full insurance.

When you ring, we will ask where the wasps are going in, how many you can see and whether anyone at the property is allergic to wasp stings. If so, say so, and we will take it into account. You can ask whether the empty nest can be taken down afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Can wasps really smell a bin from a long way off?
They are very good at picking up sugary and meaty smells, and an open or sticky bin gives plenty off. Rinse containers and keep lids fully shut to reduce the draw.
Is windfall fruit a real problem?
Yes. Fallen fruit, especially when it starts to ferment, attracts wasps in late summer. Collecting it daily and moving it away from the house helps.
What if the wasps stay after I clean up the bins?
That suggests they are coming from a nest rather than just feeding. Watch for a fixed entry point and book a visit rather than trying to deal with it yourself.
