Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Tadcaster

Forgetting that a roofline may be shared is the mistake; here is how to trace the entrance from the ground, talk to neighbours and book the nest treatment calmly.

The nest that is not on your side

One of the commonest mix-ups is assuming the nest belongs to your property because that is where you see the wasps. Sometimes they are using a gap on a neighbouring roofline, or a join between two properties, and you simply have the better view of it.

That matters because the person who is able to authorise treatment is the one who has access to the roofline. If you ring and book without checking, the technician can arrive and find the entrance is on a wall you do not control.

In Tadcaster, a North Yorkshire town, plenty of buildings stand close together or share a wall. So before you book, spend a few minutes working out exactly where the wasps are going, and have a friendly word with whoever is next door.

A shared roofline can also mean a shared void, with a single colony using space that runs from one property to the next. That is another reason to talk to your neighbour early: the activity you see on your side and the activity they see on theirs might be the same nest.

Working out whose roofline it is

From the ground, look at where the traffic converges. If it leads to a point clearly on your side of a boundary or party wall, the job is yours. If it leads to the join, or to the neighbour's board, a conversation is needed.

  1. Watch from the pavement or garden, noting the point where wasps disappear.
  2. Compare that point with the line of the dividing wall or the nearest downpipe.
  3. If it is close to the boundary, take a photo from your side and one from the road, if there is a clear view.
  4. Ask the neighbour whether they have noticed wasps or heard buzzing from their loft or bedroom.
  5. Agree that one of you will arrange the visit, so the technician is not turned away.

It is a simple courtesy and also practical: the neighbour may be able to see another entrance from their side.

If you cannot reach your neighbour, a short note through the door works well. Keep it factual: where you saw the wasps, the date and your phone number. Avoid blaming anyone; nobody asks for wasps to nest in their roof.

What the neighbour may need to know

Be calm and clear. Say that wasps are using a gap in the roofline, that you are arranging for a trained technician to deal with it, and that they should keep children and pets away from that wall until it is done. Offer to share the arrangement and any photos you took.

If the neighbour is a tenant, they may need to inform their landlord or agent. If they are the owner, they may prefer to book the visit themselves. Either is fine; the point is that someone is acting.

Do not let a disagreement over who pays hold things up. A wasp nest does not wait, and the colony grows larger every week through the summer. You can sort out the cost between you afterwards, however you decide to share it.

Booking the visit

Phone 0113 347 0014 or use the online form on the contact page. Tell us the position of the entrance and whether it is on a shared or boundary wall. We confirm the price on the phone before the technician attends: £90 for the nest, £35 for an additional one at the same property, no call-out charge. You agree first; the work follows.

We take bookings seven days a week, same-day visits are available and we work for householders and businesses. The technicians are trained and fully insured.

Mention any allergies in either household when you book, and ask whether the empty nest can be taken down afterwards.

If you are a landlord or managing agent with several properties on a terrace or row, give us the addresses and tell us which one the wasps seem to favour. Where a second nest turns up on the same property the additional price applies, so it is worth being open about what you have found.

Staying safe in the meantime

Do not try to see inside the gap, and ask your neighbour not to either. Keep windows on that side closed. If your garden is next to the wall, avoid sitting out near it or leaving food and drinks out.

If anyone is stung, wash the area, remove a visible sting and use a cold pack. Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash means you should call 999. People with known allergies should speak to their GP about their own plans.

Agree a signal with your neighbour, such as a text message, so that whoever notices activity first can tell the other. Quick communication is the best protection when two households share a roof.

After treatment, share the repair

A gap on a shared roofline needs to be closed by someone who can reach it, and it is often cheaper and simpler to agree one repair for both sides. Ask a builder or joiner to look at the fascia, soffit and any shared guttering together.

Responsibility for shared parts depends on the deeds or tenancy agreement and is not something we can advise on; check your own paperwork or ask your landlord.

Once the work is done, both households can watch the roofline in spring. A single early wasp is the signal to ring.

A small tip: photograph the repaired roofline when the work is finished. If wasps return in a future year, you can compare the picture with what you see and spot straight away whether a new gap has opened.

Frequently asked questions

What if my neighbour will not let anyone onto their roofline?
Describe the position as best you can and we will advise what is possible. Tell us about access when you book.
Do I need the neighbour's permission to book?
If the entrance is on your own property, no. If it is on theirs or on a shared wall, it is best to agree it with them first.
Can one visit cover both houses?
If the nest is a single nest, one treatment is enough. If there is a second nest at another property, it is dealt with separately.
