Why Are Wasps Flying Into Your Weetwood Home? Common Causes and Solutions

If you suspect a nest is behind the wasps in your house, knowing how the booking and visit work takes much of the worry out of picking up the phone.

Deciding to pick up the phone

After a week of wasps in the hall, you have tidied the kitchen, shut the windows and checked the bins. They still come. You have watched a few of them arrive along the same path and vanish into a gap above the porch. You are fairly sure that you have a nest, and you are not sure what happens if you call someone.

Many people put it off because they do not know what to expect, whether the price will change, or how disruptive a visit will be. This article answers those questions in order, after a short look at the causes you should rule out first.

If you are in Weetwood and you can already see a steady flight line, you can skip ahead. If you are unsure, the checks below will help.

Rule out the simple causes first

Before you book, spend a day on the basics. Wasps follow food and open routes, so check:

If you tidy these up and the visits fall away, you probably had foragers. If you see wasps coming and going from one gap, appearing in several rooms, or buzzing in a wall or ceiling, a nest is the likely cause, and no amount of tidying will remove it.

It is also worth remembering why a nest exists in the first place. A queen chooses a sheltered spot in spring, such as a gap in the eaves, a wall cavity, a chimney, a hedge or a hole in the ground, and the colony she founds grows through the summer. The wasps entering your home are the workers of that colony, going out to find food, and sometimes losing their way on the return trip.

A nest that is large does not always make itself obvious. Some are tucked into voids where the only sign is the line of workers going in and out, and that is why a few minutes of calm observation counts for so much.

What to note before you ring

A few details make the call quicker and the visit smoother. You do not need to be exact. Rough information is fine.

Take any observations from a distance. Never go closer to get a better look.

Photos taken through a window, or from several metres away with a phone zoom, can help. They are not essential. We would rather you stayed safe than sent us a clear picture.

The call and the price

When you ring, we ask for the details above and talk through the situation. We confirm the price on the phone before a technician comes out. A wasp nest treatment is a fixed £90 per nest, and an additional nest at the same property is £35. There is no call-out charge.

You are not committed by calling. Nothing is done until you have agreed. We work seven days a week, and same-day service is offered, so it is worth asking about timing when you call. If you have a deadline, such as an event or a family visit, tell us.

If you rent or the building is shared, check your tenancy agreement or lease about who arranges and pays for the work before you agree, since that depends on the document.

If someone else is dealing with the property, such as a managing agent, make sure they know that you are arranging a visit, and that the technician may need access to a loft, a garden or a roof area. A short message beforehand avoids delays on the day.

What the visit involves

Our technicians are trained and the work is fully insured. The technician will find the nest, deal with it as agreed and tell you what has been done. You do not need to be close to the nest while they work, and you will be asked to keep children and pets away from the area.

If you would like the empty nest taken down afterwards, ask when you book so it can be discussed. The technician can also tell you about any gaps or entry points they noticed, which is useful if you want to think about preventing a repeat visit.

Meanwhile, until the technician arrives, continue the precautions: keep everyone away from the nest area, keep doors and windows near it closed and leave any holes open.

If anyone is stung while you wait, wash the area, take out the sting if you can see it and use a cold pack. Call 999 if there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash. People with a known allergy should speak to their GP, and should tell us about it when they book so that we can take it into account.

Booking

Ring 0113 347 0014, or use the online booking form on the contact page at /contact-us/. Wasp colonies are founded from late April depending on the weather and reach their peak in August, with 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more, so earlier is always easier. We deal with domestic and commercial properties alike.

Whatever the situation, a clear description over the phone is the best start. Tell us what you have seen in your own words, and we will take it from there.
