How to Tell If You Have an Active Wasp Nest on Your West Ardsley Property

Sheds, garages and other outbuildings offer shelter and quiet, which makes them popular with wasps, and a careful look from the doorway is often enough to tell you if one is in use.

Why outbuildings suit wasps so well

Sheds, garages, summerhouses, lean-tos and covered storage are dry, undisturbed and full of small gaps, which is exactly what a queen looks for in spring. A nest can be tucked in a corner of the roof, behind shelving, in a cavity in the felt, or in a pile of old sacking, long before anyone notices.

Because these buildings are visited less often than a house, a nest can grow all summer without anyone knowing. The first sign is often someone opening the door and finding wasps at the window.

Lofts and garage roofs are the same story. In both, the colony can be established before you spot a thing, and the first you know is a wasp that appears in the room next door.

It is worth looking at the roof felt, ridge and gable ends of every outbuilding in spring, because a queen choosing a site will often return to the same gap for several visits before settling.

What to check before you open the door

  1. Stand a few metres back and look at the outside of the building, especially the eaves, roof edge, ventilation gaps and gaps around the door.
  2. Watch for wasps entering or leaving a crack. A steady stream is a clear sign.
  3. Listen for a hum or rustle from within.
  4. Look at the windows for wasps that have collected on the glass inside, trying to get out.
  5. If everything looks quiet and you must go in, move slowly, open the door only partly and look up before stepping inside.

Never walk straight into an outbuilding where you have seen wasp traffic. If you have, back out slowly and close the door behind you.

If you have a lock-up or garage that you do not use daily, make a note of the date you last went inside. A nest cannot be built in a day, and knowing it was clear a fortnight ago tells you that whatever is there is young.

Pay attention to the door itself. Wasps will sometimes use the gap at the top or sides of a door as an entrance, and a stream of wasps passing the frame is a clear signal.

Signs inside the building

Inside, wasps are drawn to the light of a window, so a clump of insects against the glass is a significant clue. Look up at the roof, the corners and the high shelves for a grey, papery shape. Look at the floor for fragments of nest paper or a scatter of dead wasps.

Do this check only from the doorway where you can see without stepping under the nest. It is easy to walk into a nest hanging at head height.

Rustling can also come from wasps moving over the paper of the nest itself, and in a quiet building that sound can be surprisingly loud. If you stand outside and still hear it, the nest is probably close to the wall.

Storage, clutter and where nests hide

A cluttered outbuilding has plenty of hidden spots. Nests can form behind stacked boxes, inside folded tarpaulins, in a disused barbecue, under a bench, in the hollow of a wheelbarrow or inside a wall of paint tins. Moving anything on a shelf that is humming is a bad idea.

If you have an outbuilding in West Ardsley, in the Leeds area, or one at a business, you may use it only now and then. A quick look from outside once a fortnight through spring and summer can catch a young nest at an early stage, before the colony grows.

Keep doors closed when the shed is not in use, and repair torn felt or gaps in the cladding in winter, when wasps are not about, so there is less to attract a new queen next spring.

Keeping things safe until help arrives

Put a note on the shed door so that nobody opens it by mistake, and tell family members, neighbours and anyone who borrows tools. Keep children and pets away from the building, and avoid mowing or strimming close to the walls.

Do not attempt to block the entrance, shake the building or remove the nest with a bag. Disturbed wasps can pour out of any opening, including gaps around the door.

If someone is stung, move away, wash the sting site, remove the sting if visible and apply a cold pack. Call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash.

If you keep a lawnmower, bikes or garden furniture in the building, leave them there until the nest is dealt with. Fetching them is how most people get stung.

Also consider anything that is attached to the building, such as a water butt, a trellis or a lean-to roof. Wasps use them just as readily.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wasp nest be in my garden shed?
Yes, sheds are a popular site. Look for wasps entering a gap, a hum from inside, and wasps clustering on the window glass.
Is it safe to go into a shed with wasps around?
It is best not to. If you must open the door, do so slowly and look up first. If you see a nest, back out and close the door.
Should I move boxes to look for the nest?
No. Moving stored items near a nest can disturb it. Describe what you have seen and let the technician find it.
