Wasp Nest Treatment in Bardsey – Why Early Action Matters
Putting off the call until the week of a family gathering is a common slip, because a nest found late leaves no room for anything to go wrong beforehand.
The mistake: leaving it until the week of the event
A christening, a birthday barbecue, a retirement party or simply the first hot weekend of the school holidays: wasps have a knack of becoming a problem just before one. The nest has been there for weeks, but it is only when the guest list is fixed that anybody thinks to deal with it.
The week of the event is the worst time to start. You want certainty, and what you have is a flight path across the patio and a diary that might not match anyone's availability. If you are in Bardsey and have an occasion approaching, work backwards from the date and treat the nest as the first job rather than the last.
The checklist below shows how to do that without fuss.
Working backwards from the date
- Walk the garden at the busiest part of the day, and note anywhere wasps are entering a wall, shed, bush or patch of ground.
- Ring as soon as you are fairly sure, not when you are certain. Same-day service is available, but you do not want to be relying on a single slot.
- Agree a visit date with the technician that leaves a margin before your event.
- Keep tables, chairs and play equipment away from the nest until it is treated.
- Afterwards, check the area yourself from a distance, and ask the technician what they advise.
- Only then confirm the seating plan and the marquee position.
A margin matters because it gives you somewhere to go if you spot a second entrance, or if the first look at the site shows an access problem.
If the date is fixed and the nest is large, do not try to compensate by moving the party indoors at the last minute or cancelling a hire booking. Ring first. A single visit often settles the matter long before the day, and it is much easier to make that call with three weeks in hand than with three days.
Hosts sometimes worry that a phone call will make a fuss about something small. It will not. Whether there is one entrance or several, the useful information is the same: where the wasps go in, how high it is, and when you need the space back.
Why the calendar is against you
Colonies start in late April when the weather allows, and the first nest is small and quiet. By the middle of summer it has grown, and August brings the busiest period, with as many as 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more in a single nest. Many gatherings fall in exactly that period.
A nest noticed in May and dealt with straight away is rarely a story. The same nest ignored until the week of a July party is a headache, with many more wasps, a busier flight path and guests who may include children, older relatives and someone allergic to stings.
The cost stays the same all through. It is £90 for the nest, and £35 for an additional nest on the same property. Booking early is about confidence and calm, not saving money.
Protecting guests while you wait
- Cover jugs, cans and glasses outdoors, and keep sweet food under lids.
- Place bins far from where people will sit and keep their lids closed.
- Put a table or chairs between the guests and the nest side of the garden, or simply do not use that area.
- Do not ask anyone to chase wasps away from the nest; a nervous guest swatting near an entrance is how stings start.
- Ask guests in advance if anyone has a known allergy, and tell us if it is someone in your own household.
For a sting, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. If someone develops swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999 without delay. Anyone with a known allergy should speak to their GP about it.
What the day of the visit looks like
You will have agreed the price on the phone beforehand, so there are no surprises. The technician is trained and fully insured, and works on the nest while you keep children and pets indoors. Nothing is done unless you have agreed to it.
Be ready to show where the wasps go in and out, and tell the technician about anything unusual, such as a second entrance, a locked gate or a ladder-height issue. If a second nest turns up on the same property, it is an additional £35.
If you want the empty nest removed from view before your event, ask when you book whether it can be taken down, since that depends on where it is.
Afterwards, give the area a quiet look the morning of the event. If you still see a lot of activity around the nest, ring us rather than assume it will settle by itself, and keep guests well away in the meantime.
Hosts with a hired marquee or inflatable should also think about where the delivery drivers will walk. A van crew carrying poles across a flight path is a sting waiting to happen, so tell them in advance which side of the garden to avoid, or have the nest dealt with before they arrive.
