Same-Day Wasp Nest Treatment in Belle Isle – What to Expect
When someone in the household reacts badly to stings, a wasp nest is more than a nuisance. Here is how to plan for same-day treatment with extra care.
The first thing to say on the call
If anyone in your household is allergic to wasp stings, tell us when you book. That is the single most useful thing you can do, because it lets us take it into account when we plan the visit. The treatment is a fixed £90 per nest, confirmed on the phone, with no call-out charge, and same-day service is offered seven days a week.
We are not a medical service, and we cannot advise on treatment for an allergy. What we can do is attend where the diary allows and plan the visit around what you tell us. In Belle Isle, as anywhere, ringing early in the day gives the best chance of a same-day visit, and that matters more when somebody at home is at risk.
Keep the details of the allergy in mind when you plan the rest of the day. If the allergic person usually uses the garden, the school run or the shed, work out alternatives for the duration, so that nobody has to take a chance for the sake of convenience.
Planning the household for the day
With an allergy in the house, the aim is to remove any chance of contact before the technician arrives. Think about the person’s movements through the day and the places the wasps might be.
- Keep the allergic person away from the side of the property where the nest is.
- Close windows and doors near the nest, and keep them shut until you are sure it is quiet.
- Decide who will meet the technician, so the allergic person does not have to.
- Have their usual medical items to hand, and make sure someone knows where they are.
- Make sure a phone is charged and within reach of whoever is at home.
If the person would normally be working in the garden, taking out the bins or hanging washing, find another way to cover those jobs for the day.
It is sensible to be honest about the level of worry in the house. If the person is nervous about going near any window facing the nest, take that seriously and give them a room on the other side of the property until the work is done. Comfort is part of safety.
What to do if someone is stung
Stings can happen despite all precautions, so everyone in the household should know what to do. This is general safety advice only.
- Move away from the wasps calmly, indoors if possible.
- Wash the sting with soap and water.
- Remove the sting if it is visible, scraping it out rather than squeezing.
- Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling.
- Watch the person carefully for the next little while.
Any swelling of the throat, face or lips, along with wheezing, dizziness, a widespread rash or breathing difficulty, is a reason to call 999. These can be signs of a serious allergic reaction. People with known allergies should speak to their GP about their own plan, and follow whatever they have been told.
It helps if more than one person in the household knows what the plan is. If the allergic person is on their own at any point, they should know whom to ring and where their medical items are.
On the day
When the technician arrives, a calm, brief handover works best. Point out where the wasps are going, mention the allergy once more and explain which parts of the property the person is using. The technician then treats the nest while you and the household stay inside or well back, ideally on the far side of the building.
The price was confirmed on the phone, so there is nothing more to discuss on the doorstep. A nest beyond the first is £35 at the same property. Difficult access is the one thing that can change arrangements, and that is agreed with you beforehand.
Our technicians are trained and fully insured, and domestic and commercial customers are both covered.
If you are the allergic person, you do not need to be the one who deals with it. Ask a family member, friend or neighbour to meet the technician, show them the spot and see them off, so that you can stay somewhere comfortable and out of the way.
Staying careful afterwards
For the rest of the day, treat the area as if the nest were still there. Some wasps may still circle the old entrance, and an allergic person is best kept indoors, on the far side of the house, until things settle. Do not let anyone clear up near the nest on the same day, and wait until it is quiet before opening windows nearby.
Over the following days, keep an eye out for wasps entering a different gap, or for any new nest. If anything worries you, ring 0113 347 0014 and describe what you see. Wasps begin building from late April, and by August a nest may hold thousands, so spring checks of the eaves, sheds and garden corners are worthwhile.
Spring is the best time to plan ahead. A quick check of the eaves, shed and fence line each month from late April may find a small nest early, before it has grown into a colony that is harder for an allergic person to be around.
If you are in any doubt about whether it is safe to be in a particular room, it is fine to decide that it is not. Choose caution and move to a part of the house that is clearly away from the nest.
