Wasp Nests Under Roof Tiles – A Common Problem for Belle Isle Homes

When wasps are flying to a roof that is not yours, the problem still lands on your doorstep, so here is how to handle a nest under a neighbour’s tiles.

The plain answer: it is still worth acting

A wasp nest under a roof tile does not respect boundaries. If the entrance is on the neighbouring house, the wasps still forage across your garden, visit your bins and drinks and may well find their way into your home. Sitting out in the garden under a flight path is no fun, and the nest keeps growing through the summer to a peak in August, when it can hold thousands of wasps.

So the first thing to settle is whose roof it is, and the second is how to talk about it with the people next door.

Many households find themselves in this position, including in Belle Isle, and it is usually resolved with one friendly conversation and a phone call.

If the nest is in the neighbouring roof, the aim is to get it treated by the right person quickly, without creating friction. Most wasp nests are found by the neighbours rather than the owners, since the roof void is hard to see into from inside.

Working out where the nest actually is

From your own garden it can be hard to tell which roof the wasps are using. They fly in from all directions and a line of houses can look like one continuous roofline. Stand still, keep your distance and watch where the wasps land and disappear, rather than where they pass.

If the wasps go into a gap on your own roof, you are the person to book. If they clearly go to next door’s tiles, a neighbourly word is the next step.

Binoculars can help if you have a pair, but they are not essential. Standing in the shade at the far end of the garden often gives the best view, because you are away from the flight path and less likely to be mistaken for a threat. Give it ten or fifteen minutes each time, as wasps do not move in a regular rhythm and a short look can miss the pattern.

Speaking to the neighbour

Most people are glad to be told. A wasp nest in the roof is often invisible from the inside of the house, and the occupants may have no idea. Keep it practical: say what you have seen, where and for how long. Offer to share the details and the phone number so that they can arrange treatment.

If the property is rented or empty, the position may be less clear. Who arranges the treatment can depend on the tenancy agreement, so it is best to check that document or ask the landlord or agent. We do not give advice on who is responsible, and it is not something to argue about. The wasps are what matter here.

Wasp treatment is normally booked by whoever is responsible for the property where the nest is, and the technician will need to be able to reach the roof on that property.

A note through the door or a message passed via a mutual contact can work if nobody answers. Include the date, the position of the wasps and how to contact us, and leave it there. Do not be discouraged if the response is slow; people are often away in summer.

Protecting your own side while you wait

There is plenty you can do at your own house in the meantime. Keep windows near the neighbouring roof closed, particularly on warm days, and make sure your own roofline does not have easy gaps that the wasps might also use. Keep food and drink covered outdoors and bins closed.

If you have a favourite seat in the garden under the flight path, move it for a few days. Children’s play equipment, washing lines and pet bowls are better kept away from that edge of the garden. Do not swat at the wasps or try to block their route; it will not shift them and it will raise the risk of being stung.

Think also about your own loft. If your roof space adjoins the neighbouring one, there may be a chance of wasps finding a route through. Keep the hatch closed, avoid going into the loft while the nest is active and watch for wasps indoors. If any appear in your rooms, tell us when you ring.

What you should not do

It can be tempting to take matters into your own hands when the nest is next door and nobody seems to be acting. Resist it. You should not climb onto a boundary wall, lean a ladder against the neighbouring house or throw anything at the roofline. Doing so puts you at risk of stings and falls.

The same applies to blocking gaps on your own roof in a panic. If wasps are active in your own roof void, sealing the hole can send them into your rooms, so wait until the nest has been treated.

If the nest is yours, how to book

When the nest turns out to be on your own property, treatment is straightforward. A nest is a fixed £90, an additional nest on the same property is £35 and there is no call-out charge. We are open seven days a week, offer same-day service and work on domestic and commercial premises. Our technicians are trained, and the work carries full insurance.

The number is 0113 347 0014, or you can use the booking form on the contact page. We confirm the price on the phone before the visit and do nothing until you agree. If the gap is high up, tell us so that access arrangements can be settled in advance, and mention any allergy in the household. We cover Belle Isle and the surrounding area.

Frequently asked questions

Can you treat a nest on my neighbour’s roof from my garden?
The nest needs to be on the property being booked and reachable by the technician. Whoever is responsible for that property should book, and we will confirm the arrangements by phone.
What if my neighbour will not do anything?
Keep your own household safe, keep a note of what you have seen and, if the property is rented, the landlord or agent may be the right contact. We cannot advise on who is responsible.
Could the wasps move to my roof instead?
It is possible for a queen to choose another site next season. Closing gaps on your own roofline reduces the chance of that.
