Wasps vs Bees – How to Identify Them Before Arranging Pest Control in Fearnville

A short, structured watching routine can turn a vague worry into clear facts. It takes ten minutes, and you never need to leave your seat by a window.

A routine in place of a guess

An office worker sees insects around the back door at lunchtime and does not know what to make of them. Instead of guessing, they decide to check properly. A notepad, a phone and a window with a good view are all they need.

What follows is a calm ten-minute routine, broken down minute by minute. It is designed to give you enough information to tell wasps from bees and to describe the situation clearly to someone else.

The routine works equally well for homes, shops, offices and yards. It is also useful to repeat on a different day, as the pattern may change.

There is no need to repeat it on the hour. One careful session on a warm, dry day will tell you much more than several hurried glances.

Minutes one to three: the scene

Settle somewhere safe, well away from any opening. Use a window if you can. Take a wide photograph of the area, noting the wall, roof edge, hedge or ground where you have seen insects. Write down the date, the time and the weather, since insects are more active on warm days.

Then simply watch for a minute or two without trying to interpret anything. Count roughly how many insects you can see at once. Is it two or three, or are there dozens?

Resist the temptation to move closer for a better view. If the zoom on your phone is poor, accept a less detailed picture and rely on your eyes and notes instead.

If you share the space with others, make sure they know what you are doing and why, so no one wanders into the area while you are watching.

Minutes four to six: the insects

Now look at individual insects. Use a camera zoom if you can. Check the waist, the surface and the colouring. A narrow waist, smooth shiny body and sharp yellow-and-black bands point to wasps. A rounded, furry body with softer stripes points to bees.

If you have binoculars, now is the time for them. They let you see the waist and the surface of the body far more clearly than a phone, and they keep you out of the flight path.

A useful rule is to look at three insects rather than one. If all three have a pinched waist and a glossy look, you can be fairly confident. If one is furry and the others are not, you may be looking at a mix, and it is worth recording that.

Minutes seven to nine: the movement

Next, follow the traffic. Are insects going into one gap and coming out again? How fast do they move? Do they hover at the entrance before going in? Wasps tend to be quick and angular, while bees move more heavily.

If you see a hole in the ground, notice whether the insects come and go in numbers or just in ones and twos. Large, slow, furry insects in small numbers suggest bumblebees. Quick, slim and many suggests wasps.

Keep your notes factual, such as “six in, five out, over one minute”. Opinion can come later, once the numbers are down on paper.

Weather matters here. On a cool or breezy day, activity may be reduced and you could underestimate the traffic. A warm, still afternoon is best.

Minute ten: sum up and decide

Read back through your notes. Three or four features pointing the same way make a decent case. If they disagree, that is useful information too, and you can share it when you call. Add a final line about who uses the area: children, pets, customers, delivery staff.

If the notes point to bees, please contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation, since honeybees and bumblebees are valuable pollinators and we do not treat them. If they point to wasps, you are in a good position to arrange a visit.

A small sketch, even a crude one, of where the entrance sits in relation to doors and windows is a useful addition to your notes.

Do not be put off if your notes are untidy. A rushed list with a few words and numbers is perfectly good, and the shape of the evidence is what counts.

Booking with your notes in hand

Wasp Exterminator Leeds treats wasp nests at a fixed £90 per nest, with £35 for any additional nest on the same property. We make no call-out charge, and you hear the price on the phone before anyone is sent. No work goes ahead without your agreement.

We cover Fearnville, in the Leeds area, and surrounding places, for domestic and commercial customers. Technicians are trained and fully insured for the work. Phone lines are open every day of the week, with same-day service offered. Call 0113 347 0014 or use the booking form on the contact page, and tell us if anyone is allergic to stings.

Keep everyone away from the area until the visit. Never block the opening or try to knock down a nest. If someone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack, and call 999 for any swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash.

Once you have the notes, put the phone and notepad together by the door so you can find them if the situation changes.

When the visit is booked, you can usually carry on with your day as normal as long as you keep clear of the area.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special equipment for the routine?
No. A notepad and a phone are enough, and a window is the best place to watch from.
What if the weather is cool or wet?
Insects are less active then, so you may see little. Try again on a warmer, drier day and note the difference.
Can I do the routine more than once?
Yes. Repeating it a day or two later shows whether activity is growing, which is worth telling us about.
