Wasp Nest in a Hedge or Bush – What Hunslet Garden Owners Should Know

When wasps keep appearing around a shrub by the front door or the bin store, a hidden nest is the likely cause, and the safest move is to stay clear and call.

The postman stops at the gate

It often begins with something small. The post is left on the step instead of being pushed through the door, a delivery driver mentions the wasps by your gate, or you notice you have been swatting insects every time you carry the bins out. A few wasps near a doorway is ordinary in summer. A steady stream around one shrub is not.

Front gardens are often planted with a small shrub, a low hedge or a climbing plant right next to the path. Those plants get brushed past every day, which makes a nest inside them far more likely to be disturbed than one at the end of a back garden. A colony that sits a metre from the door means constant contact with the people using it.

If you live in Hunslet and recognise the picture, treat the shrub as a nest until proven otherwise.

None of this needs panic. It does need a decision, though, because the longer the colony grows through the summer, the harder it becomes to ignore it.

Reading the behaviour around the plant

Wasps foraging for food and wasps guarding a nest behave differently. A single wasp circling a bin or a drink is looking for sugar or protein and will move on. A nest changes the pattern.

These signs get stronger from midsummer, when the colony is at its busiest. A nest started in late April or May may have been quiet and invisible for weeks before it suddenly seems to be everywhere.

It is also worth watching at different times of day. Activity is usually highest when it is warm and bright, and a nest that seems quiet in the cool of early morning can look very different by lunchtime.

Changing how you use the path

Until the nest is dealt with, the practical task is to keep people away from it without making things worse. Use the back door if you have one, and tell everyone in the house which door to avoid and why. Keep children and pets away from the front garden, and tell any visitors before they walk up the path.

Swatting does not help. A crushed wasp can release a scent that draws others, and a nest this close to people needs a professional rather than a rolled-up newspaper.

If a delivery is expected, leave a note on the door asking the courier to leave parcels at the gate, and warn any tradespeople before they start work.

Why a front-garden nest is different

A nest at the end of a back garden can be left alone, in the sense that nobody goes near it. A nest beside the front door cannot. The people most at risk are those who have no idea it is there: a visitor arriving with a pushchair, a child cutting through to the gate, someone carrying shopping with both hands full.

There is also the question of the weather. On a hot day the whole colony becomes more active, and the wasps that guard the entrance respond to anything that moves close by. A shrub next to a footpath is a poor place for them to be, and for you the risk goes up as August approaches.

If you rent your home or the garden is shared, speak to whoever manages the property and give them the details of the nest. What your tenancy agreement or insurance says about wasps depends on its wording, so check it rather than assuming either way.

What the visit involves

When you phone, we ask where the plant is, how close it sits to the door and whether anyone in the home is allergic to stings. Say so at booking, as that lets us take it into account. Wasp nest treatment with Wasp Exterminator Leeds is a fixed £90 per nest, with £35 for an additional nest on the same property, and we confirm the figure with you on the phone before the technician sets out. Nothing happens unless you agree.

Same-day service is offered, and we work seven days a week with no call-out charge. Our technician is trained, and the work is fully insured. They will deal with the nest and tell you which parts of the front garden to avoid for the time being.

You can book on 0113 347 0014 or through the form on the contact page at /contact-us/.

Getting the front garden back

Once the nest has been treated, wait for the technician’s word before you prune. Wasps that were out foraging when the nest was treated may still come back to the spot for a short while, so a quick trim the same afternoon is not a good idea.

If you would like the empty nest taken out of the plant, ask when you book whether that is something the technician can do. If it stays, it will not be reused, but removing it makes the shrub tidier and easier to cut back.

Looking ahead, it helps to check shrubs beside entrances every couple of weeks from May. Wasps start building from late April, and a nest caught while it is still small is far less alarming than one at its August peak.

Avoid the temptation to cut the shrub back hard straight away because you want a clear view. A bare plant tells you nothing new, and the technician will have a better sense of the entrance if the foliage is left as it was.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just move the pot or plant away from the door?
No, moving or disturbing the plant can provoke the wasps. Leave it where it is, keep clear, and have the nest treated first.
Why are there wasps in my hallway when the nest is outside?
Wasps from a nest close to an open door or window can drift inside. Keep that side of the house shut up until the nest has been dealt with.
Do you treat nests at shops and offices as well?
Yes. We cover domestic and commercial properties, and the same fixed price applies to a nest in a planter or hedge at business premises.
