Wasp Nests Under Roof Tiles – A Common Problem for Hunslet Homes

A nest under the tiles is not a job to tackle from a ladder, and understanding why the height matters can save a nasty fall as well as a lot of stings.

The ladder idea and why it goes wrong

A common story goes like this. Someone spots wasps going in under a tile above the back door, decides it looks reachable, and props a ladder against the wall with a can of something from the shop in one hand. It seems a reasonable plan until the first wasps come out.

At that point you are on a narrow rung, one hand holding the ladder, with insects heading straight for your face. People flinch, twist or swat, and that is exactly how ladders slide. The danger is not only stings; it is the fall.

This is why advice about roof nests in Hunslet and elsewhere starts the same way: keep both feet on the ground and let someone equipped for working at height do it.

Falls from ladders are among the most common household accidents, even without wasps. Adding a hostile swarm to the equation makes it much worse, so it is better to avoid the attempt altogether.

What makes a roof-level nest different

A nest in a hedge or a shed can often be seen and reached at a sensible height. One under tiles, in the eaves or behind a fascia board is different in several ways.

All of this adds up to a job where the right equipment and experience matter far more than bravery.

How to judge it from the ground instead

You do not need to climb to gather useful information. Stand back at a comfortable distance and note where the wasps are going in. Is it at the edge of the roof, along the ridge, or under a particular tile? Count the number of wasps you see arriving over a minute or two if you want to describe the activity, though do not worry about getting it exact.

A photo taken with the zoom on your phone is worth having. When you ring us you can describe the location, and the technician can plan the right access before arriving. Remember that every home is different, so a clear idea of how high the entrance is and what is below it helps us sort out the access arrangements on the call.

Do not try to peek in with a torch or block the hole. A disturbed colony is more defensive, and a blocked exit simply sends the wasps looking for another one.

What a trained technician does differently

People sometimes assume the difference between a professional and an amateur is only the product used. In truth, a large part of it is preparation and judgement. Before anything else, a technician looks at the building as a whole: where the entrance is, what is underneath it, how the roof is built, and where the wasps are likely to go if disturbed.

They think about the people on the property too. A nest above the back door is a different problem from one above a side wall nobody uses. They will ask you to keep family and pets inside, and they will tell you which windows to keep closed and for how long.

Working at height is the other major piece. The right access equipment, steady footing and protective clothing make a roof-level visit routine. The same job done with a borrowed ladder and no protection is a gamble.

It is also a matter of knowing when to stop. If something is unusual about the nest or the building, a technician will talk it through with you rather than press on blindly.

How the visit works

When you book, the price is confirmed on the phone first: a fixed £90 for a nest, with no call-out charge, and £35 for each additional nest on the same property. Nothing is done until you agree. The technicians who attend are trained, the work is fully insured, and they arrive with the access equipment the roof needs.

You will usually be asked to keep everyone indoors or well away from the affected side of the property while the treatment is carried out. Afterwards the wasps around the entrance will gradually stop coming and going. The technician will tell you what to expect and what to do about the empty gap, and you can ask whether the old nest can be taken down.

If you have any questions about the day, such as where to stand or when to come back out, ask the technician. They are used to explaining the process to worried householders and would rather you asked than guessed.

Afterwards and next steps

Once the colony has gone quiet, arrange for a roofer or builder to repair the tile or edge so that it cannot be used again. Doing the repair first would trap live wasps inside, so leave it until the nest is dealt with.

If you are ready to arrange a visit, call 0113 347 0014 or fill in the booking form on the contact page. We work seven days a week, can often attend the same day, and look after both homes and commercial premises. If anyone in the house is allergic to stings, tell us when booking so we can allow for it.

In the meantime keep windows near the roofline shut, keep children and pets away from that side, and treat the area as out of bounds.

Frequently asked questions

What if the nest looks low enough to reach?
Even a low-looking entrance can lead to a nest that is much larger and further back than it appears. It is safer to leave any active nest to a trained technician.
Can a neighbour with a long ladder help?
Please do not ask them to. The risk of a fall and of multiple stings is the same whoever is on the ladder, and it is not worth it.
Will the technician need to come inside my house?
Not always. Many roof-level nests are treated from outside. If the technician needs to see anything inside, they will explain this on the phone or when they arrive.
