Can You Remove a Wasp Nest Yourself? Advice for Oakwood Homeowners

Chimneys, roof tiles and high gables are popular nesting places, and also the hardest to reach safely. Here is why you shouldn’t go up there.

A buzz from the fireplace

On a warm afternoon you notice a low buzzing from behind the fireplace, and perhaps a wasp or two on the hearth. Outside, you can see wasps entering at the chimney stack, or at a gap beneath a tile. It sounds like a job for a long pole, a ladder and a quick effort from the garden, and it is exactly the sort of job nobody should attempt alone.

Roof spaces and chimneys are warm, dry and protected, so they suit nests very well. They are also high up, awkward and unforgiving.

Why the roof is not a place for amateurs

Roofs are slippery, steep and uneven. Moss, loose tiles and wet slates give no grip, and even a low-pitched roof can send you to the ground in a moment. Add a defended colony to that and the risk becomes serious.

It is not worth being badly hurt over a nest that a trained and insured technician can reach with the right equipment.

Even those who work at height regularly do so with training, equipment and a plan. A householder with a borrowed ladder has none of these, and a defended nest is a most unforgiving thing to meet at the top of it. If you would not clean the chimney stack yourself, you should not approach a wasp nest there either.

The risk indoors if the nest is disturbed

A nest in a chimney does not only threaten the person on the roof. If wasps are disturbed, the flue may carry them down to the fireplace, where they can enter the room. The same applies to a nest in the loft, where wasps can find the gap around a hatch or a light fitting.

Do not light a fire to smoke them out. This is dangerous, does not solve the nest, and could leave you with a blocked flue and a house full of fumes. Leave the fire unlit and the chimney untouched.

Another thing to avoid is capping the pot or stuffing something into the chimney from the top in order to trap the wasps. It does not remove the colony, and a blocked flue can cause problems of its own when the fire is next lit. Wasps may also find a different route through a gap around the fireplace, a loose bit of render or a cracked air brick.

If wasps are coming down into the room, resist the idea of vacuuming them up or trying to catch them in a glass for hours. Keep the room closed instead, and let the number inside reduce naturally.

A final point on pets: cats that sit on the hearth or dogs that sleep beside the fireplace should be moved to another room until the chimney is clear.

What to do inside the house

Cover or close off the fireplace if wasps are coming down. A piece of thick card taped over the opening is fine, but do not stand in front of it while you do it, and keep the room door closed. Keep other rooms free of wasps by closing doors and putting towels along gaps.

  1. Open a window in the affected room and leave so that stray wasps can go.
  2. Keep children and pets away from the fireplace.
  3. Do not tap the chimney breast or flue.
  4. Note where outside the wasps are entering.
  5. Take a photo of the stack from the ground.

If anyone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. Call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, breathing difficulty, dizziness or widespread rash.

Remember that the loft is part of the same picture. A buzzing in the ceiling, brown stains or wasps at an upstairs window may point to a nest beneath the tiles rather than in the stack. Leave the hatch shut and keep the cover on. Tell us about it when you ring, because it changes what the technician needs to bring.

Describing a roof nest for the technician

Technicians appreciate a good description of the roof. Say whether the building is a bungalow, a two-storey house or something taller, whether the entrance is on the main roof or a porch roof, and whether the garden has space for a ladder or access platform. Mention if there are overhead cables or a narrow side passage.

These details help the technician plan the visit and bring what they need. They also make clear that you are staying off the roof yourself, which is the right decision.

If you have scaffolding up for roof work, mention that when booking. Builders and wasps rarely mix, and your roofer may have seen the nest already. Share what they have told you, but do not ask a tradesperson to deal with it unless they are trained to do so.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use the fireplace if wasps are in the chimney?
Do not light a fire. Keep the fireplace covered and the room closed until the nest has been treated.
Can a chimney sweep deal with the nest?
We treat wasps and can deal with the nest. Check any chimney work with a sweep once the nest has been treated.
Can I wait until winter when the wasps are gone?
You can, but the nest stays active until then, and wasps can enter the house in the meantime. Treating it sooner reduces the risk.
