Found a Wasp Nest in Your Loft in Oakwood? Here's What to Do
Knowing what will happen on the day makes the visit much less stressful. This guide walks through the booking call, the arrival and the clear-up in order.
The phone call
A householder rings on a Tuesday morning after spotting wasps by the landing window. They are asked a few simple questions: where the wasps are, whether the loft is easy to reach, and whether anyone is allergic to stings. Within a short call, a plan is in place.
That is how the visit begins for anyone in Oakwood or the wider area. Ring 0113 347 0014, or use the online booking form on the contact page, and have a few details ready.
The point of the call is to make sure the visit goes smoothly, not to test you. If you do not know an answer, say so. A description such as the landing ceiling by the bathroom, or the back corner of the roof, is plenty.
It also helps to say when you first noticed the wasps and whether the numbers have been growing. That tells us how active the nest is likely to be.
What we will ask, and what you will be told
The questions are practical and help us prepare. They include where in the house you have seen wasps, whether you can see an entrance outside, how you reach the loft and whether the hatch is in an easy position. If someone in the household is allergic to wasp stings, tell us then.
You will be told the price before anyone sets off. It is a fixed £90 for the nest, with no call-out charge. If we find an additional nest on the same property, it is £35. We offer same-day service seven days a week, and we work with homes and businesses alike. We do nothing until you say so.
Be ready to say whether the hatch is easy to reach from the landing, or whether it is in a cupboard, in a bathroom or at the top of a steep stair. A hatch that is awkward to reach is not a problem, but we like to know in advance.
If you are a tenant, say so, and let us know whether the landlord or agent has agreed to the visit. If you are booking for a business, tell us who will be on site.
Feel free to ask anything else at this point, such as who will come, roughly when, or whether you need to be home.
Before the technician arrives
- Clear a path to the hatch and move anything stored on the landing.
- Keep children and pets in another part of the house.
- Keep the hatch shut until the technician arrives.
- Have your notes or photos of where the wasps are seen handy.
- Make sure someone adult is available to let the technician in and show them the way.
You do not need to buy or prepare anything else.
Give any dogs, cats and small children a safe place to stay for the duration of the visit. A closed room at the far end of the house is ideal, with a few toys or a favourite blanket to keep them settled.
At the property
Our technicians are trained and fully insured. On arrival, they will ask you to show them where the wasps have been seen, then check the access to the loft and decide how best to approach the nest.
You will be asked to stay out of the loft and away from the affected rooms during the work. This is for your safety, as well as the technician’s. If the nest is in an unusual position, they will explain what they plan to do and confirm that you are happy for them to go ahead.
You can ask about the empty nest at this stage, including whether it can be taken down. If you did not ask at booking, now is a good time.
Please do not follow the technician into the loft to watch. It might seem helpful, but you would be adding another person to a cramped space with a nest that is, until treated, still defended.
If you need to speak to the technician, wait at the bottom of the stairs or on the landing and speak from there.
When the work is done
The technician will tell you what has been done and when it is safe to go back into the rooms concerned. Keep the hatch closed until they say otherwise, and follow any instructions they give about the clear-up.
It is normal to find some dead wasps near the hatch or on the ceiling side of the room. Wear gloves, collect them with a brush and pan or a vacuum and put them in a sealed bag in the bin.
You will not necessarily see anything dramatic from where you are. Many nests are tucked away in a corner of the roof void, and the work often looks undramatic from the room below.
If you have any worries, keep them for the end of the visit, when the technician can talk you through what was done and what you can expect.
Questions worth asking before they leave
- Is it safe to use the landing and nearby rooms normally?
- When can I go into the loft?
- Can the empty nest be taken down?
- Is there a gap on the outside that might be worth repairing?
If you are stung before or after the visit, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and apply a cold pack. Swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a spreading rash mean you should call 999.
Take a note of what you were told while it is fresh, such as when the loft is safe to enter, because it is easy to forget the details once the technician has gone.
