Same-Day Wasp Nest Treatment in Scarcroft – What to Expect
Climbing up for a closer look is the classic error with a high nest. Staying on the ground, you can still give the technician everything needed to treat it.
The mistake: going up for a look
A nest under the gutter, in a roof corner or inside a gable vent tempts many people to fetch a ladder. It is a bad idea for two reasons. A ladder puts you within reach of the entrance with one hand on the rung, and a sting at height is a fall risk as well as a pain.
If you are in Scarcroft, in the Leeds area, keep both feet on the ground. Wasp Exterminator Leeds offers same-day service, open seven days a week, and our technicians are trained and fully insured to work at height around nests.
Below is what you can usefully do from the ground, and what the visit involves.
It is worth knowing that wasps often choose high, sheltered spots precisely because they are out of reach: under tiles, behind fascia boards or inside cavities where a roof meets a wall. That is a reason to leave the job to someone with the right equipment, not a challenge to take on yourself.
What you can tell from the ground
You do not need a close view to describe a high nest. A few minutes of watching from the garden is plenty.
- Which side of the house the wasps come and go from.
- Whether they disappear under tiles, into a vent, behind fascia boards or into the brickwork.
- Roughly how many storeys up the entrance is.
- Whether a roof, conservatory or porch lies below it, which affects where a ladder can stand.
- Whether you can see grey papery material around the opening.
A photograph taken with the zoom on your phone from well back often shows more than you would expect. Stay out from under the entrance while you take it.
Binoculars are fine, provided you use them from a safe distance and not from a window directly under the nest. A quiet spot on the lawn that is well to one side of the entrance is a better choice. If wasps start to notice you, step back and go inside.
Clearing the way for access
A technician can only work safely if the ground below the nest is clear and firm. Spend the wait tidying the approach rather than approaching the nest.
- Move cars, bins, plant pots and garden furniture from below the spot.
- Unlock side gates and clear the path to the wall.
- Tell neighbours if a ladder may need to stand on or near their side.
- Keep children, pets and visitors indoors.
If the nest is above a doorway or window, use a different entrance and keep that window shut. Draw curtains or blinds if you are worried about wasps tapping on the glass.
If the wasps are using a flat roof or a lean-to as a flight path, keep the area underneath free as well, so the technician has room to move.
Booking and price
Phone as early as you can; same-day service is offered but cannot be promised for every call, and early calls give the best chance. The number is 0113 347 0014, or use the booking form on the contact page.
The cost is a fixed £90 per nest, confirmed on the phone before the technician visits. Another nest on the same property is £35. There is no call-out charge, and no work starts without your agreement. Where a nest is unusually hard to reach, the technician will talk it through with you before anything begins.
Domestic and commercial properties are both covered, so a barn conversion, shop front or office is treated the same way as a house.
Mention any special features of the building, such as a flat roof, a steep pitch or a glass extension below the nest. They affect how a ladder or other equipment can be positioned, and the technician can plan for them. Be as straightforward as you can; there is no need to worry about describing it badly.
When the technician arrives
They will look at the position with you, decide how best to reach it and set up with care. You will be asked to stay indoors or well back, away from the base of the ladder as well as from the nest.
The aim is to deal with it in one go, which is what the 1 visit guaranteed line on our price graphic refers to. If you would like the empty nest removed from the roof edge afterwards, ask at booking whether that can be done in your case.
Do not be concerned if a few wasps are still flying near the old entrance for a while after the visit. Leave them be and keep clear.
If you are not at home, say so when you book and explain who will let the technician in or how they can reach the back of the property. A clear note on the front door, or a neighbour who knows what is going on, is often enough to avoid delay.
Stings and first aid
If anyone gets stung while the nest is still active, move away, wash the area and take out the sting if you can see it. A cold pack eases the pain. Anyone with swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash needs 999 straight away.
If a household member is allergic, tell us when you book so we can take it into account. They should also speak to their GP about what to do if stung.
Keep in mind that a high nest can look quiet from the ground even when it is busy, since wasps slip in under tiles unseen. Do not take a lack of traffic as a sign that it has gone. Speak to us if in doubt, and always keep away from the area until the technician has been.
