Same-Day Wasp Nest Treatment in Tyersal – What to Expect

A nest inside a chimney breast or wall cavity cannot be seen, only heard and watched. Here is what to do about it while waiting for same-day treatment.

When you cannot see the nest

Some nests are not under a roof edge or in a hedge but inside the structure of the building. A chimney, a cavity wall, an air brick or a gap behind cladding can all give wasps a sheltered home that you will never see. What you notice is the traffic: wasps vanishing into a small gap, or appearing in a room with no obvious route.

Same-day treatment is offered, and the nest treatment is a fixed £90. You phone, the price is confirmed before anyone attends, and a trained technician comes on the day if the diary allows. There is no call-out charge, and it runs all seven days. In Tyersal, as anywhere, the more clearly you can describe the entrance, the easier the visit.

Chimneys and cavity walls are attractive because they are warm, dry and sheltered from rain. Wasps can get in through very small gaps, such as a cracked pot, a loose flashing or a missing air brick cover, and they build out of sight until the colony is big enough to spill into the house.

Signs of an internal nest

A hidden nest gives clues. Learn to read them, because they tell the technician where to look and help you stay clear of the worst of it.

If you hear noises from a fireplace, do not light a fire and do not open the flue to look. Keep the room closed off and wait for the technician.

A torch shone from a safe distance at the outside of a wall can show a dark entrance, but do not shine it into a chimney pot or air brick, and do not put your face close. An upward view from the ground with binoculars is much safer.

Protecting the rooms inside

When a nest is inside a wall or chimney, wasps sometimes find their way into rooms through gaps you did not know existed. Take simple steps in the meantime.

  1. Close the door to the room closest to the nest and keep it shut.
  2. Stuff nothing into gaps, vents or fireplaces, as this can push wasps further in.
  3. Cover a fireplace opening only if you can do so calmly and without disturbing it; otherwise leave it.
  4. Open a window in a different room if a wasp gets in, so it can leave.
  5. Keep children and pets out of the affected room.

Do not tap the wall to find out where the nest is, and do not drill or cut into plaster or brickwork. Disturbing a nest from inside can make matters much worse.

If you hear scratching in the walls at night, remember that wasps are quieter then, and the sound may well be something else. Mention what you have heard, but do not assume that the noise is a nest without seeing the traffic by day.

What the technician does

The technician will ask where you have seen wasps entering and leaving, then examine the outside of the building and, if needed, the room concerned. The nest is treated while you stay well back. You will not need to open walls or remove anything.

The price is fixed and agreed on the phone. Access is the only thing that can affect arrangements, and it will be discussed with you in advance, not at the door. Another nest at the address would be £35.

If the empty nest remains inside the structure, ask the technician when you book whether it can be taken down. Be aware that there may be limits where a nest is behind brickwork or plaster.

If the nest is in an old unused chimney, mention whether the chimney is capped, blocked or open. It affects where the wasps are going in and out, and it helps the technician decide how best to approach it.

Afterwards

After the visit, wasps may still emerge from the entrance or appear in the room for a while. Leave the room closed, and avoid sitting close to the wall or fireplace until it is quiet. Do not seal the entrance on the same day.

If a significant number of wasps are coming into the house, ring us on 0113 347 0014 and tell us exactly where. If anyone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. Treat swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness, breathing difficulty or a widespread rash as a 999 situation.

Wasps begin building from late April, and the colony grows to a peak in August, when a nest can hold thousands.

A nest that is inside a structure may leave staining or damp patches. Do not scrub or paint over them until the technician has said the area is quiet, and speak to a builder if repairs are needed afterwards.

Once the wasps have settled, the next question is usually about repairs. A builder can look at any gap, loose flashing or damaged pot that let them in, and it is sensible to have that done before next spring, when queens start looking for somewhere to build. Wait until the technician has said the area is quiet before anyone starts work close to the entrance.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to light the fire if wasps are in the chimney?
No. Leave the fireplace alone and keep the room closed until the technician has dealt with the nest.
Should I seal the hole the wasps are using?
No. Blocking an entrance can push wasps deeper into the building and towards living spaces.
Will the technician need to open the wall?
You should not have to open or damage the wall yourself. Describe what you see when you book and the technician will advise on the day.
