Wasps Around Your Guttering and Fascias? How to Find the Nest in Tyersal

A few safe photographs and notes taken from the ground make the booking call quick, and help the technician arrive knowing where the wasps are heading.

Information that makes the call simple

You do not need expert knowledge to book a wasp nest treatment, but a little preparation makes the call quicker and the visit smoother. The technician needs to know where the wasps are going, roughly how high that is, and what is around it. All of that can be gathered from the ground in a few minutes, with a phone camera and a pen.

The aim of this guide is to show you what to capture and what to say, whether you are in Tyersal or elsewhere. None of it involves going near the nest, and all of it is optional: if you only have time to ring, we can still talk it through.

Photographs from a safe distance

Stand well back, at a spot where wasps are not flying across your path. Take one wide picture of the full side of the building showing the roof edge, and then a zoomed picture of the area where the wasps are entering. Use the zoom, not your feet. A blurred close-up is of little use, and it brings you within reach of the colony.

Do not lean out of an upstairs window to take any of these. If you cannot get a safe shot, a verbal description is perfectly good.

Notes to jot down

Write down details you would otherwise forget during the call. The more specific they are, the easier it is for the technician to plan.

  1. Which side of the property: front, back, left or right as you look at it.
  2. How far along the roof edge, for example near the corner, above the second window, or by the downpipe.
  3. Roughly how high: below the first-floor windows, level with them, or at the top of the gable.
  4. Whether the entrance seems to be behind the gutter, in the fascia board or in the soffit underneath.
  5. The time of day the wasps are busiest, and when you first saw them.
  6. Whether you have seen more than one entrance.

Number six matters for pricing: an additional nest on the same property is £35.

What to tell us about access

Access is the part people most often forget to mention. Is there a side gate, and is it locked? Is the area under the roof edge clear, or full of plants, bins or a shed? Is there a conservatory, a porch roof or a flat roof near the entrance? Are there overhead wires or a neighbour’s boundary nearby?

If the property is a business, say who will be on site and whether there is a keyholder. If the property is a rental, say whether the landlord has agreed to the work. If the nest is shared between two properties, let us know that.

Also say if anyone at home is allergic to wasp stings, so we can take that into account, and let us know about any dogs that run loose in the garden.

What not to do while you gather the details

The preparation is meant to be safe and quick, so a few cautions are worth keeping in mind. Do not tap the wall to see whether anything buzzes. Do not shine a torch into the gap. Do not stand directly beneath the entrance for a better angle, and do not use a ladder or stool to get closer for a picture. It can help to think of the job as watching a busy road: you want to observe the traffic, not stand in it.

If at any point wasps seem to be paying you attention, stop and walk away calmly. Photographs can wait for another time, and a description is perfectly adequate.

Taking pictures at different times of day can show how the traffic changes, but you should never feel under pressure to collect more than one or two. The technician will look at the site on arrival regardless.

Why the detail helps

The more precise your description, the less time the technician needs to spend working out what is where. That helps with timing, because we can plan the visit around the position and height of the entrance, and with confirming the price in advance, because the picture is clear from the start. It also helps you: you are not left guessing about what will happen on the day.

If you have not been able to gather any of it, do not delay the call. Tell us what you do know and we will take it from there.

Making the booking

When you phone, we will go through what you have noted, confirm the price and agree a time. Our fixed price is £90 a nest, £35 for each additional nest on the same property, with no call-out charge. We always confirm the price on the phone before the technician visits, and we do no work until you have agreed to it. We are open seven days a week, offer same-day service, and cover domestic and commercial properties in Tyersal and the surrounding area. Our technicians are trained and fully insured.

To book, ring 0113 347 0014, or use the online form on the contact page. If you use the form, paste in your notes, and attach your photographs if the form accepts them.

After the visit, ask a builder or roofer to repair the entry gap, and ask the technician at booking whether the empty nest can be taken down.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to send photographs to book?
No, they are only a help. A clear description of where the wasps are going is enough for us to take the booking.
Is it safe to film the wasp traffic?
Yes, if you stay well back and use zoom. Do not approach the wall or open a window to get a better view.
What if I cannot work out where the entrance is?
Tell us where you have seen the wasps and when. The technician can usually find the entrance on arrival, so do not go closer to look.
