Guides on finding, understanding and dealing with wasp nests.
A wasp nest hidden among loft insulation and boards is best left to a technician; clear a safe route to the hatch, and do not go up to look.
Takeaways are busy, warm and full of food smells, so wasps notice them early; the answer is to find the nest and have it treated, not to fight each wasp.
Blocking the hole feels like the quickest fix for a wall nest, yet it is the move most likely to push wasps into the house.
Ivy, honeysuckle and other climbers can cover a wasp nest completely, so a fence or wall that looks quiet can still hold a busy colony behind the leaves.
Before you phone anyone about a stinging insect, a few minutes of safe observation and a photograph can save time and make sure you are asking for the right kind of help.
