A steady buzzing above the ceiling usually means wasps have built in the loft; the safe response is to leave the nest alone, keep the hatch shut and book a treatment.
Garden furniture, cushions and old parasols make good hiding places for wasps, and a nest behind them is best left to a technician rather than sorted by hand.
A wasp nest in an empty rental is one of the simpler problems a landlord faces, because one fixed-price visit can clear it before the next tenants arrive.
A grey papery ball in an outbuilding is often last year’s nest, but you should check it is truly empty before you go near it.
